Magg Dylan – Amethyst

Album Review By Rainer Kerber

Magg Dylan come from the US East Coast from Virginia Beach. Bands like In This Moment, AC / DC or Rise Against are mentioned as influences. Since 2018 the musicians have also performed various live performances as openers for various national bands (All That Remains, Rivals etc.) Founded in 2017, the band is now under contract with Eclipse Records.

The entry into the album is provided by “Delusional”, a modern heavy metal song. This immediately makes it clear what the listener can expect in the next thirty-six minutes. Every now and then I am reminded of the sound of Lacuna Coil. The Americans sound similarly somber. “Scarz” was the first single release. Loud and impetuous. A statement against all the people who rate you negatively without understanding how they scare you with these insults. “Naked Alone In the Tub” spreads an extremely dark mood. Here Magg Dylan thematizes how a life that does not go as desired can plunge a person into deep depression. And how to overcome them. The experiences of Suzanne and Brucifer have been incorporated here. The songs “Sadness” and “F.I.N.E” will probably tell the story further. Especially in “Sadness” the sometimes-hectic guitars testify to the fight against these negative feelings. In “F.I.N.E.” the singer screams and grows her frustration from her soul. Here, too, the riffs sound extremely dark.

“Amethyst” is an extremely personal album. You won’t find lovely harmonies here. Hard and dark riffs describe the many negative life experiences that the musicians have had so far. The album is also a therapy for depression, which has almost become a popular epidemic. You have to listen closely here. I hope and wish that Magg Dylan was able to relieve a lot of stress with this. And now can look a little more relaxed into the future.
