Founded in 2013 in Aachen (Germany), the band Grey Attack has been playing Heavy Metal without clichés from the very beginning. Hard and tough riffs are at the centre of the powerful sound. At least that’s what the press release for the fourth album ‘Back To Greysland’ says. The band has already toured with various Rock and Metal heavyweights. Among others with Anvil, Bonfire, Y&T or Robin Beck. After some excursions into spherical, melancholic Heavy Rock, the current album takes them back to their roots.

The album kicks off with the title track ‘Back To Greysland’. After a short introduction, a mid-tempo anthem majestically blasts out of the speakers, rounded off by a skilful guitar solo.  After marching noises, ‘Soldiers’ rocks lively without leaving the mid-tempo range. The chorus is easy to sing along to. Even ‘You Turn Me On’ doesn’t work without a short introduction. But soon the guitars are roaring and the drums are booming. Grey Charlez’s vocals are, as before, slightly raspy. A very melodic Power Metal ballad follows with ‘We Want It All’. The drums and occasional guitars in particular provide the pressure. The vocals are somewhat alienated in places. ‘Story Of You’ is the next ballad. A little quieter than its predecessor and with a big chorus. ‘I Love Rock’n Roll’ ends the break with a hard drum introduction and fast riffs. And yes, the title is a concept. Although ‘Cruising’ starts off ballad-like, this is the next mid-tempo banger. ‘The Mountain’ begins with heavily distorted guitar riffs before they later strike with force. In between, there are always quiet tones. ‘The Fire’ is another epic power ballad. On the other hand, ‘Get Over Me’ really gets going again. The tempo picks up a little, especially during the chorus. During ‘I Am – You Are’, the musicians continue to pick up speed. Fast, banging riffs dominate over long passages. The album ends with the anthem ‘This Light’.

On ‘Back To Greysland’ you can hear well-made Power Metal. Apart from the ballads, most of the songs are in the mid-tempo range. However, this doesn’t get boring because Grey Attack can score with varied compositions. Again and again you can hear very good guitar solos.
