I Am The Void

Playing time: 14:53
They hail from Salt Lake City (USA), the Power Metal band Judicator. Founded in 2012, they have published six studio albums so far. The EP “I Am The Void” was released in December 2023. The songs had already been recorded the year before. This is why the line-up differs from the current line-up. Back then, Judicator was still a four-piece and is now a quintet, so the promo photo does not reflect the line-up at the time of production. In addition to a new song, a Blind Guardian cover can also be heard.
The first song to be heard is the title track “I Am The Void”. It starts very calmly, even ballad-like. John Yelland’s vocals are initially accompanied only by piano sounds and strings. Of course, it doesn’t stay that way for the entire nine minutes. The song gradually builds up before the full power of the instrumental section kicks in. Guest musician Francisco Pérez does a great job on the keyboards and orchestration. A great Power Metal anthem. This song could also have been on a Blind Guardian album. You can clearly hear that John has already worked with Hansi Kürsch. And so it almost goes without saying that there is a cover version of “The Curse Of Feanor” on the EP. And it’s damn close to the original. It’s only the vocals that drift slightly apart. Sure, Hansi is a unique singer. But John Yelland doesn’t even try to imitate his great idol. He adds his own vocal note here. And this is also excellent.
“I Am The Void” has inspired me to listen to other releases by the quartet from Salt Lake City. That’s how outstanding the two songs on the EP are.
