The time has come. After five singles incl. video clip and the EP “Covers II“, the debut album “Different Kinds Of Losses” by Rioghan has been released. This is the solo project of Finnish singer Rioghan Darcy, real name Jenni Perämäki. I had already briefly reviewed the two singles “Blackened Sky” and “Sight” here.

The opener “Sight” starts with sound gimmicks. At first, the singer is accompanied only by piano and strings. Later, this quiet song sounds extremely melancholic.  About halfway through, the instrumental section kicks in with great power. “Promises” is especially impressive because of the booming bass and the interplay between chanting and clear vocals. “Breath” is again of the quieter variety. Acoustic guitars, strings, piano but also riffs thrown in now and then. In addition, a fragile seeming voice. In “Home” you can enjoy the interplay of hard riffs and quiet piano sounds. In addition, there is a chorus that can be sung along quickly. “Bruises” then has a clear turn towards Electro-Pop/Rock. But even here the melodic component is not neglected. With the acoustic ballad “Time”, Rioghan shows her soft side. Also “Innocence” is one of the more relaxed songs. However, the tempo picks up a bit and the instruments are electronically amplified again. “Reflection” is hard Metal, heavy riffs, the singer leaves the contemplative area and contributes growls again. “Lights” then moves into soulful Pop-Rock realms. Jenni Perämäki shows here how variable her voice is, from breathy passages to powerful Rock vocals. In the quiet bouncer “Summer”, Tony Kaikkonen can be heard as Rioghan’s singing partner.

On their debut album, Rioghan offers a mix of styles from Rock, Electro-Pop, Dark Progressive to Metal. Nevertheless, “Different Kinds Of Losses” doesn’t seem patched together. The songs simply fit well together. You should listen to the album in peace and quiet, then you can always recognise new facets of the sophisticated song writing.
