I have known the Scottish band The Fall of Eve for many years. I had the pleasure of experiencing the band’s very first gig in Bilston (near Wolverhampton) in 2015. I was blown away by Evangeline’s unique voice from the start. But as life goes, the one constant in the band is the married couple Laura and Micheal Moffat. Despite everything, the two have been releasing very good albums and EP’s for years. Most recently “Nevermore” in 2019, and now comes the next EP, “Beyond The Veil”. The two have also started a successful crowdfunding campaign for this EP.

Already on “Special Part Of Me” you can clearly hear the trademarks of the band. Melodic metal, powerful riffs, double bass in the midtempo range. But the band’s figurehead is clearly singer Evangeline. A voice like no other in metal. And the compositions are clearly tailored to this clear as a bell voice. With “Weather The Storm”, the Scots show how varied melodic metal can sound, and that no excessive bombast is necessary. That’s why the orchestration is discreet and song-serving. Much more important are catchy melodies, which fortunately do not seem monotonous. The ballad “Stay With Me” mainly uses e-piano, keys and strings. Evangeline puts a lot of feeling into her singing. Boo-hoo! The title song, the metal anthem “Beyond The Veil” is the highlight of the EP for me. “Starlight” is obviously the last (fifth) regular song on the EP. Once again, powerful riffs and driving double bass can be heard. The song “Forgotten” is available as a bonus in two versions. On the one hand as a soulful ballad and on the other hand as an orchestral version. The latter was missing from the promo I was given.

The Fall of Eve continue exactly where they left off with “Nevermore”. Melodic, heartfelt metal. And they do it well. Of course, Laura’s voice is clearly in the foreground. And her comrades-in-arms put it skilfully into the scene. Surely there is not much new to hear, but the song writing is on a high level. It’s fun to listen.
