This time they have taken more time – Walk in Darkness, probably one of the most mysterious bands in Heavy Metal. The instrumentalists have given themselves fantasy names and hide their faces under black hoods. Only the singer is known, Nicoletta Rosellini from the Italian Metal band Kalidia. After “In the Shadows of Things” (2017), “Welcome to the New World” (2018) and “On the Road to Babylon” (2020), the fourth album “Leaves Rolling In Time” will now be released in January. Was it worth the wait?

The beginning of “Ships To Atlantis” replaces the intro of the album. Epic choruses and bombastic orchestrations dominate this part. For about 40 seconds. Then the song becomes a midtempo anthem. The trademark is of course the powerful singing of Nicoletta Rosellini, sometimes with a dark timbre, then again in a high soprano. The title song “Leaves Rolling In Time” starts with acoustic guitars. This song also seems like a ballad, only the evil growls provide a contrast. And it continues in the midtempo range, whether “Bent By Storms And Dreams”, “Get Away” or “Walk Close To Me”. Every now and then, guitar solos set Metal scents. You have to wait a long time for the musicians to break out of this pattern. Only “The Last Glow Of Day” is a bit harder in places. The regular closing song is the ballad “Elizabeth”. The bonus track “No Oxygen In The West (Shaman Version)” obviously features the band founder Shaman on vocals.

I have to admit, I liked the first two albums of the band most. Sure, on “Leaves Rolling In Time” you hear beautiful melodies. And none of the songs is bad.  Again and again, very beautiful guitar solos and a singer who once again proves her skills. But the album offers too less variety, at least for my taste. Should Walk in Darkness have run out of steam a little bit after five years?
