Heavy Metal is a family.

That’s how the press release begins. And with Wizard Death you can take it literally. Guitarist Tim Kenefic (e.g. Assimilator, Throne) has teamed up with his son Alex (Alexander Kenefic). The result is an EP with three songs. Although four are listed on Bandcamp. Apparently, the title track “I Am the Night” is available in two different versions.

The demo recordings were sung by Alexander Kenefic. However, his father thought these recordings were so good that he sent them to his vocal coach Kayla Dixon (Witch Mountain). And that’s why we hear her on the three songs on this EP. She literally screams her heart out on “I Am The Night”. And puts her stamp on this song. But of course the guitar work is also outstanding. The drums can’t quite keep up. Although they are constantly driving, even during the magnificent guitar solo. “Under The Southern Cross” is a little quieter at first. Before a fast pace is established here too. The drumming also comes into its own. On “Slay The Serpent”, Witch Mountain founder and guitarist Rob Wrong supports the up-and-coming Metal project. His doomy guitar playing creates a special atmosphere in this song.

This father/son collaboration is already fully convincing on its first release. Although they were only founded in 2023, the duo sounds like a band that has been playing together for many years. I hope they follow up with a new release soon.
