The members of Hellwrath – vocalist Paul Bower, guitarist Igor Korsakov and bassist Dylan Price – were drawn together by a shared desire to blend the heavyweight forces of slam death and deathcore into a unique and utterly crushing sonic beast. Despite only gathering beneath the Hellwrath banner earlier in 2024, they are already poised to unveil the first representation of their shared vision of devastation and desolation. Inspired by time spent working in the pressurised and dangerous environment of the prison service, battles with the devils of mental illness and the bloody horrors of the Old Testament, Hellwrath have created the punishing, monolithic and fiercely focussed force of Sin Eater!
Opening with the lurching, slow motion decay of ‘Silence By Death’, that consumes everything in its path with methodical, merciless intent, Sin Eater grows in power as it progresses, adding to its array of weaponry with each earthshaking step. The utterly inhuman vocals rumble with malice beneath the scorched earth riffs and insistent, unstoppable rhythm section as we are dragged through the meat grinder of ‘Insipid Oblivion’, into the overwhelming darkness and rage of ‘Sin Eater’ itself. The weight behind each blow that this song delivers is terrifying, the sheer skull fracturing, bone-breaking impact shocking. The band stretch their black wings on the EPs closing tracks, a cover of Godsmack’s ‘I Stand Alone’ that has been force-fed steroids and dirt and a disturbing EDM remix of ‘Sin Eater’. Perhaps the two finest songs on Sin Eater though are ‘The Alchemist’ and ‘Hellwrath’ where the capacity for absolute destruction that that this band possesses is unleashed with incredible effect. Within the clutches of these monstrosities we can bear witness to the rampant violence that Hellwrath have currently mastered and the potential for utterly apocalyptic annihilation to come.
A release like Sin Eater demands an immense sound with which to deliver its prophecies of catastrophe and to achieve that aim Hellwrath employed the services of Alex Sedin (Anachronism, Adelon, Essence Of Datum etc) of Ghostalgy Prods. The results are a set of songs that sound ironclad and indestructible, intimidating and imperious. Prepare to be ground into dust when the Sin Eater comes your way on August 19th.
