I have to admit, singles are not my thing. I don’t use streaming services and I don’t create playlists either. I always listen to whole albums or EPs on my MP3 player. But unfortunately, Ember Sea from Hanover have only been releasing singles recently. ‘Albums aren’t worth it for us. We’ll stay with singles…’ That’s the band’s info. So that Ember Sea don’t miss out, I do listen to one or two singles. The last one was ‘Shine (My Dying Star)’. The single ‘Ahab’, which is somehow located in the Moby Dick universe, has just been released.
According to the press information, however, this is less about the story of Herman Melville’s worldwide success. It is more about giving an insight into the thoughts and feelings of Captain Ahab. The Hanoverians take this into account with much more epicness than usual. Many orchestral elements have been incorporated. The band’s trademark – pronounced keyboards and synthesiser passages – also come into play. Eva Gerland’s vocals are powerful and expressive as usual.
Once again, I’ll do without a rating. That’s very difficult with a single with only one song. But when I listen to ‘Ahab’, I regret once again that Ember Sea have decided not to release a new album. Even if it was just an EP with four to six songs.
