After shaking the underground with their crushing singles “Loathe” and “Colossus”—both accompanied by visceral, uncompromising videos—rising sludge metal force Themata are ready to carve their name deeper into the heavy music landscape with the release of their debut EP, Riven.

The seeds of Themata were planted back in 2018, when the idea for a new, crushingly heavy project began to take shape. It would take years of refining vision and sound before the band fully materialized, drawing together members known from Atlases, Dö, Grave With a View, and I, Cursed. This collective pedigree forged the foundation for a sound that is both uncompromisingly heavy and rich with depth.

Blending suffocating riffs, towering grooves, and an atmosphere as bleak as it is cathartic, Riven is an unflinching statement of intent. Across its tracks, Themata channel the weight of modern sludge while weaving in experimental edges that set them apart from their contemporaries.

“The whole idea behind Riven was to capture the feeling of being torn apart—emotionally, mentally, even physically,” the band shares. “It’s heavy music for heavy times.”

Loathe introduced listeners to the band’s raw aggression, while Colossus cemented their reputation for writing monumental, spine-crushing riffs.
