Walk in Darkness
Gods Don’t Take Calls
Out: 12th December 2025
Playing time: 49:51
Walk in Darkness from Italy are arguably one of the most mysterious bands in the Rock and Metal world. The only band member whose identity is known is singer Nicoletta Rosellini (ex-Kalidia, The Erinyes, Alterium). The faces of her musical comrades-in-arms remain hidden, with the musicians concealing themselves behind pseudonyms. Hardly any other band has managed to do this so far. Walk in Darkness were founded in 2015 by guitarist and songwriter Shaman. The first two albums (In The Shadows Of Things, Welcome To The New World) were released one year apart in 2017 and 2018, both on 17 February (!). It took a little over two years for ‘On The Road To Babylon’ to be released. After another three years, the somewhat weaker ‘Leaves Rolling in Time’ followed. It also took almost three years for the current ‘Gods Don’t Take Calls’ to be released. Of course, I was excited about this album.
Epic strings introduce ‘Nico Rising’. Accompanied by guitar riffs, Nicoletta Rosellini’s clear and powerful voice resounds, sometimes with her dark timbre. Well-crafted Dark Rock, with a beautiful guitar solo. ‘Across The Oceans’ is a little quieter. It also has a very catchy chorus. In ‘No Banners No Glory’, we hear some deep growls right at the beginning. These contrast with the enchanting vocals of Clara Sorace, a talented cinematic singer. There is also a guest on the microphone in ‘Chasing The Horizon’. Emiliano Pasquinelli provides downright vicious-sounding growls, which stand in direct contrast to Nicoletta Rosellini’s vocals and the beautiful melodies. Once again, Shaman impresses with a strong guitar solo. ‘Freedom’ is a great anthem. Clean male vocals in duet with Nicoletta. In the absence of other information, I assume Shaman is the vocal partner. As the title suggests, ‘Mother’ is a contemplative ballad. Once again, the interplay of male and female clean vocals can be heard. The female vocalist shows her gentle side. ‘Towards Chang’an’ is also a very calm song. Acoustic guitars can be heard at times. With ‘You Who Dream’, the tempo picks up again towards the end, with the familiar interplay of ‘Beauty and the Beast’. At the end? In principle, yes, because the bonus track is a new recording of the pop-heavy ‘Last Siren’ from the 2017 debut album ‘In The Shadows Of Things’. And the current version is definitely rockier than the original.
Walk in Darkness remain true to themselves on ‘Gods Don’t Take Calls’. Dark, gloomy guitar sounds accompany the outstanding female vocalist. It is clear that Nicoletta Rosellini is still the band’s figurehead on what is now their fifth album. We hear a balanced mix of calm Dark and Symphonic Metal. It can be said that the symphonic component is more strongly weighted than at the beginning of their career. Thanks to the varied songwriting, I like this album even better than its predecessor.
