Hyperion were founded in 2015 by drummer Jason Beghelli and guitarist Davide Cotti in Bologna, the capital of the northern Italian region of Emilia-Romagna. Their goal was to play traditional Heavy Metal in the vein of bands such as Metal Church, early Queensrÿche and Judas Priest. However, they wanted to add their own personal touch. Their debut album, ‘Dangerous Days’, was released in 2017. Three years later, ‘Into The Maelstrom’ was published. However, due to the Covid pandemic, they were unable to perform the songs live. One year later, there was a turning point. Several members left the band and had to be replaced. It then took some time before the new line-up was able to work on new material. The result, ‘Cybergenesis’, will be available to listen to from the beginning of 2026.

After a short guitar intro, the Italians kick off really fast with ‘Deafening’. Singer Max Morelli is driven by fast riffs and galloping drums. However, there are also quieter phases. With the guitar solo, the song then switches back to high speed. ‘Rewire, Rebuild’ starts off calm and melodic, but is hardly any slower than its predecessor. This continues with ‘Yet We Still Fight’. Despite the tempo, there are always beautiful melodies to be heard. The vocals alternate between raspy and high-pitched screams.  In contrast, ‘The Shackles Of Chronitus’ seems almost ‘foam-braked’. However, there is little change in the hardness of the drums and string instruments. With ‘Blood Over Chrome’, one might think that Hyperion is now taking a breather. Far from it, only the song intro is ballad-like. Even after that, the high, sweat-inducing tempo is maintained. Whether it’s ‘Grain Of Sand’ or ‘Rhizome Rider’ – the twin guitars and drums keep driving the song forward. At least the anthem ‘The Whole Of Time’ offers a small but very welcome variety. Although even here, there is no shortage of high-tempo passages.

Hyperion uphold the traditions of the bands mentioned above. However, these bands were also known for their great ballads. Unfortunately, these are nowhere to be found on ‘Cybergenesis’. The musicians show that they are certainly capable of this in one or two song introductions.
