Although White Skies was only formed in 2020, they are not newcomers. Singer Mick White has been active on the British Melodic Hard Rock scene since the 1980s. He has sung with bands such as Samson, with whom he supported Iron Maiden on their ‘Somewhere in Time’ tour. Or with First Strike. But the other band members can also look back on many years of experience. Following their 2022 debut “Black Tide”, ‘Shouting At The Hurricane’ is the band’s second album.
The Brits really rock out with ‘If This Is It (Get Ready)’. It feels like being taken back to the heyday of AOR Stadium Rock. Beautiful melodies, outstanding, slightly raspy vocals and a lot of enthusiasm. ‘88 Crash’ is not to be confused with Suzi Quatro’s 1973 hit ‘48 Crash’. Instead of solid Hard Rock, we hear AOR here too. A little quieter than the opener, with catchy riffs. The Hammond organ wafts along. And there’s a strong guitar solo. ‘Money To Burn’ is a true riff monster with lots of beautiful melodies. You just have to bang your head or shake your hair. It goes without saying that there is also a great guitar solo to celebrate here. ‘I Can’t Make This Alone’ is a contemplative ballad. It invites you to dream. The vocals are also less raspy to match. Fast, loud and hard, that’s how ‘The Girl’s In Love’ comes across. Drummer Daz Lamberton drives his bandmates forward. Thunder and rain appropriately introduce ‘Shouting At The Hurricane’. Otherwise, there’s not much of a hurricane to be felt. Calm and catchy melodic Rock with ‘dubdudu’ passages. ‘Those Days’ is a little faster and, above all, more rhythmic. It also has a catchy refrain that you can quickly sing along to. ‘One Life’ is another ballad. Singer Mick White is initially accompanied by an acoustic guitar. Later, an electric piano and tambourine join in. But electric guitars and drums are also essential. Once again, you feel inspired to close your eyes and dream. ‘Righteous Zone’ abruptly ends any dreams. A straightforward Rock song with a sing-along chorus. Piano and strings then characterise ‘Control’. A mixture of ballad and epic anthem. Contrary to its title, ‘So Sweet’ is not sticky at all. Instead, it rocks cheerfully. Finally, gentle tones resound again in ‘Kissed The Rain’.
‘Shouting At The Hurricane’ is a colourful bouquet of timelessly beautiful AOR songs. Bands of the eighties filled large stadiums with this sound. Epic anthems, hard but melodic Rock songs and beautiful ballads alternate. For the interested listener, it is a journey back to those great times. For the musicians, it is certainly a reminiscence of their musical roots.
