The press release describes Godthrymm as a ‘British Doom Metal giant’. Formed in 2017, the band initially released two EPs. Their debut album, ‘Reflections’, was released in 2020 and marked the start of the ‘Visions Trilogy’, which continued three years later with the ‘acclaimed’ album ‘Distortions’. After a further three years, this trilogy is now concluded with ‘Projections’. In doing so, they are reviving ‘the glorious aura of British Doom Metal from the early to mid-90s’. The band was founded by Hamish Glencross (ex-My Dying Bride/Vallenfyre/Solstice). He was joined by drummer Shaun Taylor-Steels, a former bandmate.
‘Trenches Deep’ kicks off exactly as you’d expect from a traditional Doom Metal album. Calm yet powerful guitar melodies dominate. Guitarist Hamish Glencross sings with a clear voice, backed by the ethereal vocals of keyboardist Catherine Glencross. She also provides the epic tapestries of sound. In the second half, the British band significantly pick up the pace, thanks to fast, rumbling riffs and double bass drumming. Vocally, there’s a genuine duet between Hamish and Catherine. At times, one might think the song is drifting into Speed Metal territory. “Truth In My Own” comes across as hard-hitting and powerful. The riffs just blast out of the speakers. Yet the song feels much calmer again. Initially, Hamish Glencross’s clear vocals dominate, but later Catherine Glencross’s beguiling voice can also be heard. ‘The Sun Never Fell’ is a monumental, Epic Doom masterpiece. The vocals begin with Catherine, who then alternates with Hamish. It is the heavy riffs in particular that lend the track an almost anthemic feel. On the no less epic ‘Endure My Skin’, former My Dying Bride singer Aaron Stainthorpe makes a guest appearance. As was also the case on the predecessor with ‘Follow Me’. The final two tracks, “Jewels” and ‘Hope Is Eternal’, showcase Godthrymm’s stylistic diversity through Progressive Metal elements. Catherine Glencross took the lead in writing these two tracks. On the largely tranquil ‘Jewels’, she also takes over the vocal part entirely, proving that she is capable of more than just enchanting vocals; her powerful voice is equally compelling. Finally, things get significantly heavier with “Hope Is Eternal”. The Double Bass is also back, providing a temporary increase in tempo. Catherine, who once again takes on all the vocals in a duet with herself, also contributes a number of deeper tones.
With ‘Projections’, Godthrymm showcase the very best of Epic Doom Metal. And they demonstrate just how varied Doom Metal can be. Catherine Glencross’s vocals have been mixed in two-part harmony in places. You don’t hear that very often. I don’t think the press release was exaggerating when it spoke of Doom Metal giants, because what you hear on this album really does sound monumental.
