With this bold new work, the band dives deeper into the shadows than ever before, tearing a multifaceted and cinematic epic from the depths of darkness
We’re talking about the Finnish Heavy Rock band Rough Grind and their latest release, ‘Neverending Night’. This is the third album from the band, which was formed in 2011. After three EPs, their debut album ‘Pieces of Resistance’ was finally released in 2020, followed two years later by ‘Hardened’. Their sound is characterised by ‘raw power and relentless intensity’. Not much else could be found out, so the music must speak for itself.
Following an epic introduction, ‘Waiting For The Night To Be Over’ takes on a very melodic tone. The vocals sound a little raspy and are accompanied by strings, as well as guitar melodies and riffs. In the second half, the guitarists showcase their skills with a guitar solo. ‘The Great Divide’ starts off ballad-like, before the drum-driven guitars take over here too. The vocals no longer sound raspy at all. For a brief moment, the guitars on ‘Shotgun Bride’ sound frantic. But the keyboards lead into a catchy Rock song. The chorus is perfect for singing along to. In contrast, the rhythmic ‘All The Time’ is significantly harder, thanks to the distorted guitars. But also a little calmer. ‘Ocean Of Dying Dreams’ starts off bubbling before the riffing guitars and, above all, the drums set the pace and literally sweep singer Sami along. Repeatedly underpinned by keyboards, which then lead into guitar solos. Despite the sound of horses neighing, ‘Crazy Rodeo’ doesn’t sound nearly as crazy as the song title would have you believe. A mid-tempo rocker with raspy vocals and another sing-along chorus. ‘Shining Scar’ starts off bass-heavy and initially suggests a power ballad. Later, it turns into a lively mid-tempo rocker with a strong guitar solo. Next comes ‘Quietus’, the ballad that’s been announced for some time now. With acoustic guitars and harmony vocals. All things have to come to an end. ‘Everything Must End’ – you couldn’t ask for a more fitting title for a closing song. It begins with keyboards before building into an anthem-like piece.
There isn’t always a sense of ‘raw power and relentless intensity’ (to quote the press release: ‘While Rough Grind’s signature sound still pulses with raw power and relentless intensity’). I had imagined it would be a bit different. In the same breath, however, the press release also mentions the ‘soulful atmosphere and carefully woven soundscapes’. I can certainly confirm that completely. And that is precisely what makes the album so worth listening to. Even though my expectations were somewhat different, I like ‘Neverending Night’. Thanks, too, to the well-crafted compositions and arrangements.
