Călin Pop Turns a Dream
into Music with “Lights of Longing”

“Lumini de dor” in Romanian, a new instrumental rock single and accompanying music video

Romanian guitarist, singer and songwriter Călin Pop has released “Lights of Longing” (“Lumini de dor”) on 16 October 2026 via Universal Music Romania. Inspired by a vivid dream in which his guitar seemed to speak to him, the instrumental rock single is accompanied by a sunlit music video that deliberately reflects the imagery of the dream.

For listeners outside Romania, Pop may be a new name, but he is no newcomer to rock music. He is the founding guitarist and lead vocalist of Celelalte Cuvinte, a band formed in 1981 whose 45-year journey has taken it from progressive rock into heavier territory, including hard rock and metal, while retaining a distinctive musical identity.

Although the guitar has always been central to his career, instrumental-only releases have seldom been his focus. On “Lights of Longing”, Pop communicates directly through the instrument.

The idea arrived unexpectedly, during the night. Pop recalls:

“One night, I dreamed how the guitar spoke to me, wrapped in rays of sunlight that opened like a fan. I woke full of emotion, with music vibrating in my soul. When I caught sight of it on the stand, I immediately took it in my arms to record the melody that was still lingering in my mind.” — Călin Pop

That melody became “Lights of Longing” (“Lumini de dor” in Romanian). Its title conveys the meeting of light and emotion at the heart of the piece. Asked what it feels like to make music without vocals, Pop says the experience is like speaking with his guitar.

The accompanying video gives the dream a visual counterpart. Filmed in a golden field, it places Pop alone with his electric guitar among open landscapes, close-up performance shots and strong natural sunlight. The location and recurring rays of light were deliberately chosen to recall the imagery that inspired the composition. The video was filmed and edited by Teo Tîrnovean.

The release comes in a year that also sees Pop reflecting on his extensive musical journey through his autobiography, Celelalte Cuvinte ale mele. Alongside his long-standing work with Celelalte Cuvinte, he has built a substantial solo catalogue that allows him to explore music outside the band’s established sound.

“Lights of Longing” is a different kind of introduction to an artist with decades of experience: not a retrospective, but a personal piece sparked by a moment between sleep and waking, and brought to life through guitar, landscape and light.

Călin Pop
Călin Pop is a Romanian guitarist, vocalist, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, best known as the frontman, lead guitarist and a founding member of Celelalte Cuvinte, one of Romania’s long-established rock bands.

Formed in 1981, Celelalte Cuvinte emerged from the progressive rock scene and developed a musical identity that continued to evolve across the decades. The band’s catalogue moves through progressive rock, hard rock, metal and alternative influences. Albums including Celelalte Cuvinte I, Celelalte Cuvinte II, Armaghedon and Ispita trace that evolution. Forty-five years on, the band remains an enduring presence in Romanian rock.

As the band’s lead vocalist and guitarist, Pop has been a central figure in its musical life since the beginning. Alongside Celelalte Cuvinte, he has pursued a prolific solo career, with releases including Undeva, Ritual de iarnă, In-Fusion, Dor de primăvară and Cutia cu secrete. His independent work has given him room to follow musical ideas beyond the band’s established identity.

In 2026, Pop published his autobiography, Celelalte Cuvinte ale mele, reflecting on his life and musical journey. His new instrumental single, “Lights of Longing” (“Lumini de dor”), emerged from a dream in which his guitar appeared to speak to him amid rays of sunlight. The accompanying golden-field video deliberately returns to that image, presenting a personal new chapter in a career spanning more than four decades.
