Founded from the ruins of Devil I Know
There is very little information about the band Devil I Know on the internet. They were a Finnish band that played American-style Melodic Hard Rock and released one album in their years of existence. And I find the phrase “from the ruins” a bit exaggerated. After all, the instrumental section is unchanged, only the singer is new. Anyway. Jo Below were formed in 2017. More than one year after the debut EP “By The Rules”, the successor “No Control” is now released.
And the Finns play fine hard rock, sometimes with an alternative edge.Singer Johanna Kari can score with an expressive, sometimes slightly snotty sounding voice. Sounds like a mixture of Dolores O’Riordan (Cranberries), the young Sandra Nasić (Guano Apes) and Lzzy Hale (Halestorm). The opening song “Ms. Death” is also reminiscent of the aforementioned protagonists in terms of sound. “Where Are You Now?” sounds a bit more melodic. With clean guitars and minor Pop influences. Here the singer makes the difference. So it’s not a pop slush. Another Dimension” is also a catchy midtempo Rocker. This continues with “I Confess”. The title track “No Control” itself is an acoustic ballad and ends the EP.
The songs on the EP are mainly midtempo Rockers, in which catchy Rock melodies are discreetly enriched with Alternative elements. The band’s figurehead, however, is singer Johanna Kari, who puts her vocal stamp on the individual songs. It’s fun to listen to over the whole playing time. Jo Below are another positive new surprise for me.
