What was the beginning pint for your music career? How did it all start?
It all started when Sam (drummer) and I met in a juvenile detention center. We were both new and had no one else to talk to, talked forever about Suicidal Tendencies. We both agreed when we got out that we’d start a band, but lost track of each other. We happen to run into each other at a Slayer show and almost immediately started jamming. Soon started Red Maker, met Kyle at a show later on. He had his gear on stage, and when he saw it was just me and Sam playing he hopped on stage, plugged in his guitar and shredded the night away. I’ll never forget how wild the crowd was! He didn’t know any of the songs but he’s such a good guitarists, when he came up to play it’s like we had been together the whole time. He told us afterwards he’s our new guitarist. After that shit we didn’t dare disagree.
Was there any bumps on the road? What kind of challenges did you have to deal with?
We’ve had times where we’ve been out too late after shows and unfortunately run into the underbelly of society. Just the run wrong dudes staring you down the wrong alley. Lots of toothless women who seem to want to get really friendly but in no way appealing.
What was the most fulfilling and satisfying moment so far?
We had a chance to play a festival in our state. We’ve already played quite a few shows across the Midwest, but when we got there loads of people were wearing flower crowns just like we do and a bunch of our shirts and a good amount of them were singing every word to every song. It was mind blowing to see and I think really confirmed that people believe in this band just as much as we do
How would you describe the music that you typically create?
Alternative indie has kind-of been our go to genre description. But honestly Red Maker is almost a genre mutt. We do things that are kind of punk, a little country, a little pop, rock, indie. We love so many different styles of music that we can’t help but let all of it find an influence on everything we make.
What is your creative process like?
One of us brings in either a whole song or sometimes just a guitar riff we might just like. Then we all get together and try to make the best song out of it that we can. When it comes to the “lyrics or music” first question, it’s always music for us.
If you could change anything about the industry, what would it be?
You tend to hear a lot about corruption and rip offs, like with misleading contracts and what not. Basically anything involving some sketchy thieving shit like that, is something I’d like to see disappear, but unfortunately will probably continue till the world meets it’s end.
If you were asked to give a piece of advice to upcoming bands, what would that be?
Don’t waste time. Write a load of songs, that’s the only way you’ll get to your good songs faster. Don’t waste time waiting to be ready for gigs, just go out there and do it.
What has been the best performance of your career so far?
Most of the time it feels like when we’ve put on the performance of a life time, like planets aligned on our rockery type of shit, it’s always for like 3 people who could give a shit about anything we just did.
If you didn’t become a musician, what would you be doing now?
Probably just enjoying my week nights and free on the weekends.
