Today, Chernaya Rechka releases another single, “Жалость (Pity),” off of their upcoming self-titled album, set to drop on June 2nd via Artoffact Records. Driven forward by catchy bass hooks and playful undertones, the new single is the last to be unleashed before the full-length and sonically, it couldn’t feel more suiting to that role – drawing in listeners with snappy drum lines and keeping them on the hook with well-knit dreamy instrumentals and vocals.

On the single, the band comments that it “is a classic number from the Chernaya Rechka, where the plot of the relationship between two people is comprehended. One of which cannot give the other what he deserves, and the other, in turn, cannot leave him. This is a sad story of little people whose life is centered around a gray life, but in their dreams they are in a fairy garden.”

Marking the fourth single, “Жалость (Pity)” follows “Романс (Romance),” “Лёд (Ice),” and “Звезда (Star),” together laying a solid foundation for the band’s full-length self-titled, which is less than a month away now!

The album’s first single, “Романс (Romance)”, set the tone for the rest of the album – simultaneously haunting, beautiful, and heavy. Reflecting on the track, the band commented that it “is about how difficult it is to get through to the person whom you offended, without wanting to. The song became a key in shaping the new sound of the band and paved the way for further experiments that reveal its great multi-genre potential.”

“Лёд (Ice)” follows suit, presenting haunting lyrics which speak to the current undeniably devastating situation in Russia. With lyrics like “we escape and burn bridges, leaving a tortured city in ruins, we are unhappy and completely empty, absolutely indiscriminately,” the single articulates the looming dread in the country and is an emotional display of what it is like being present for this moment in Russian history.

On the single, the band commented: “Ice, in the band’s classic sound, is a reference to a well-known song by the Russian cult punk band «Гражданская оборона», which sang that “we are the ice under the major’s feet”, on which he will definitely fall. Chernaya Rechka pays tribute to this group, calling its song Ice, but the key message is changing – there are no hopes, the current reality of Russia is such that we are rather dirt under the feet of the major – he will get dirty in it, but will not fall.”

Boasting forceful sonics and a more industrial sound than the previous singles released from the forthcoming full-length, “Звезда (Star)” showcases the band’s range while following suit with the album’s overarching themes. The band classifies it as, “aggressive and gloomy… a song about how we ourselves senselessly destroy our future, in which we could be happy if we took everything into our own hands, but when we realized this, our hands were already in the blood.”

Черная речка (Chernaya Rechka, translated as Black River), is a Russian indie-rock and post-punk band formed in Kirov in 2013. The band members started playing together in the band Debauch, conceived as a garage punk project in the style of Hives or Eagles of Death Metal. However, according to frontman Igor Rysev, the band lacked musical experience, and they had close to zero level of proficiency with their instruments. Instead of garage punk, they got just punk – dirty, crooked, and primitive. And that didn’t stop them…

MORE ABOUT CHERNAYA RECHKA:

Debauch consisted of four people: Igor Rysev – bass, Zhenya Devyatyarov – guitar, Denis Ivonin – drums, Evgeny (Mik) Ovcharenko – vocals. A year later, after the band’s first major tour in 2013, the guys decided to take on something more serious. Zhenya offered to play post-punk, assuring the rest that the genre was about to become popular. After the first few rehearsals, Igor came up with a name for the group – “Black River”. The roles in it were slightly redistributed: Igor, as in Debauch, was responsible for composing music, but now he played the guitar, Zhenya was responsible for the bass, Mick remained on vocals, but added a second guitar; and Denis, as before, was on drums. Soon after, when two songs were already written, Mick said that he was forced to leave the group in connection with moving to St. Petersburg. Igor took responsibility for the vocal parts. From that moment on, the core synergy of the band was established: Igor Rysev – vocals, guitar, Evgeny Devyatyarov – bass, Denis Ivonin – drums.
