Sonic Addictive come from France and play Cinematic Rock/Metal according to the press release. The quartet was founded in 2020 and has been working on their first album since then. However, the first release is the EP “Welcome To Neon City”. And instead of a full album, the second EP is now apparently in the works, as a sequel, so to speak.

The opener “Neon City” is an overlong instrumental intro. with a lot of sound-games and noises, like you can hear in a city. And dispensable. Only with “Mirror Of The Unreal” it really gets going. First with synth sounds. These are later fortunately drowned out by pleasing Rock sounds. Especially the powerful voice of Julie Mathieu-Miniconi is convincing. “My Winter Storm” is a stomping Rock song, with partly hectic vocal passages. Later, pop-sounding passages are added. But in the foreground is always rocking guitar work. With a great solo. “Shine On” is at first industrial techno heavy. Julie warbles here partly in the high tone range. Unfortunately, the synths keep pushing themselves into the foreground. This is not quite to my taste. On “Goodbye City” the singer is supported by Embersland frontwoman Clara Beack. A quiet, even ballad-like song that is the highlight of the EP for me. The so-called 16 bit version of “My Winter Storm” is not my cup of tea. It’s more a bonus for die-hard Sonic Addictive fans. If these already exist because of the short band history.

On “Welcome To Neon City”, light and shadow are close to each other. In the end, however, the positive dominates. A release on which the band can build. For the production of the album, however, there is still a lot of room for improvement. I wish the musicians would drop some of the experiments that can be heard on this EP.
