Aeon Gods from Lübeck (Schleswig-Holstein, Germany) were formed in 2022 by former members of the Symphonic Metal band Aeternitas. With a new musical concept. Two years later, ‘King Of Gods’ was released, featuring ten Power Metal anthems on the theme of Babylonian and Sumerian mythology. In an interview, mastermind and singer Alex Hunzinger hinted that they want to turn to Egyptian myths in their second album. And this will be released in February under the title ‘Reborn To Light’. A change in line-up is worth mentioning guitarist Nino Helfrich is being replaced by Pat Hesse.
From the chaos rose the dawning
Bringing order to day
Chasing shadows away
This will bring a first day’s morning
Harmony prevails
These are the lines from the chorus of ‘Birth Of Light’ – the epic anthem that kicks off the album. And right from the start, the Northern Lights really get going. The newly emerging sunlight is celebrated with epic choruses. And the Egyptian sun god Ra (or Re) is introduced in ‘Flames Of Ember Dawn’. A no less convincing anthem. The ‘Amduat’ is ‘The Book of the Hidden Chamber’, the oldest ancient Egyptian literary work of the ‘Books of the Hereafter’. And the next four songs are dedicated to it – ‘Barque Of Millions’, ‘The Sacred Union’, ‘Soldiers Of Re’ and ‘Reborn To Light’. Songs that could hardly be more different. A magnificent power ballad is followed by another high-speed anthem, a rhythmic, solemn song and a Speed Metal banger. Once again, the lyrics focus on the Egyptian sun god, here named ‘Re’. In ‘Feather Or Heart’, Anubis is born from the twilight. The god of funerary rites, protector of graves who is often depicted as a man with a dog or jackal head. The mid-tempo anthem starts with a polyphonic vocal arrangement. The last three songs are dedicated to the downfall of Re’s empire (‘Re’s Dying Reign’). At the beginning of ‘Rebellion’, part of the story of the sun god is briefly told. But the downfall has already begun. Ironically, it is Hathor, the goddess of love and women, who is sent by the gods in ‘Blood And Sand’ to seek out and kill sinners. Powerful, even hymnal-like, combative melodies accompany this. ‘Farewell’ is the swan song of the gods, especially Re. Humanity has turned away and is hostile towards the gods. A great deal of disappointment and frustration is unmistakable. But there is also a reflection on the beautiful times of the past. A final powerful hymn.
In ancient Egypt, there was a sheer multitude of gods. It is impossible to honour them all in songs. Nevertheless, in my opinion, some important ones are still missing. Regardless, the music is what matters. And in this regard, Aeon Gods have significantly improved compared to their debut album. Nine magnificent and varied Metal anthems as well as a ballad ensure plenty of listening pleasure. I am already excited to see which ancient world of gods the journey of Aeon Gods will continue to take us.
