Airborn are a Power Metal band from Turin (Piedmont, Italy). The musicians have been active since 1996. However, only Roberto Capucchio and Alessio Perardi are still on board from the early days. During this time, six studio and two live albums have been released. In 2018, Airborn launched the first part of ‘Lizard Secrets’ entitled ‘Part One – Land of the Living’. The sequel, ‘Lizard Secrets: Part Two – Age of Wonder’, followed two years later. The Italians took five years to complete the third part, ‘Lizard Secrets: Part Three – Utopia’. In mid-September, the wait for fans will finally be over.
The song title ‘Kings Of Melody’ lives up to its name. Melodic guitar melodies introduce the song. Then the drums kick in. And the melodic arcs return again and again. A pleasing introduction. In ‘In Utopia’, you first hear galloping guitars. But later, the drums once again set a fast tempo. However, singer Alessio Perardi remains unperturbed. His vocals remain melodic. And this general musical concept continues. ‘Forever Is A Long Time Coming’ is also driven forward by drums. Added to this are riffs and consistently good guitar solos, as in “Futuremaker”, ‘Magic Bullet’, ‘Soldiers Of Misfortune’ and ‘Skeleton Crew’. However, this does not mean that boredom sets in. The individual songs are musically very varied. In between, the rhythmic ‘Oil’s Well That Doesn’t End Well’ offers some stylistic variety. Here, the bass also comes to the fore a little. Keyboards are also incorporated. The concluding ‘My Own World’ is, in my opinion, the highlight. With a length of just over seven minutes, it is a Power Metal epic with many changes in melody, tempo and rhythm.
‘Lizard Secrets: Part Three – Utopia’ is a good Power Metal album. Although the song structures are often similar, it offers a lot of musical variety. The band is a well-rehearsed team. The experience of the founding duo Roberto Capucchio and Alessio Perardi is evident. The songwriting is very mature. The music is not a reincarnation of the Rhapsody universe, which also originated in Italy. Airborn definitely go their own way here.
