The Progressive Power Metal band Assignment hails from Gütersloh (North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany) and has been playing since 1994. Initially, they had obviously turned to Death/Thrash Metal, which could be heard on their 1996 demo ‘Thoughts Without Previous Knowledge’ (source: Encyclopaedia Metallum). However, they were already playing Progressive Power Metal on their albums. This is also evident from the title of their debut album ‘Progressive Changes’. Four more albums followed until 2020. After several singles and EPs, the time has now come for their next full-length album, ‘With The End Comes Silence’. Several guests were invited to contribute to this album, including Thomas Vikström (Therion, ex-Candlemass – backing vocals), Marco Ahrens (Poverty’s No Crime – guitar) and Simone Mularoni (DGM – guitar).

The video for the opener ‘Fallen’ also served as an album announcement. It offered a brief preview of what was to come to the world of Metal. Powerful, melodic Power Metal with an outstanding singer (Diego Valdez). And so it continues. After a short guitar intro, the guitars also rumble in ‘Nothing To Say’ – melodic and mid-tempo. Even the sophisticated guitar solo doesn’t change that. In the ballad ‘Beyond Recognition’, Argentine singer Diego Valdez is initially accompanied by an electric piano. But don’t worry, we then hear a great power ballad. Towards the end, the balladic mood is temporarily abandoned. Sounds reminiscent of Industrial Metal/Rock introduce ‘Those Words’, but only briefly, as the hard riffs ensure a slight increase in tempo. ‘The Tower’ is then calmer again. After a balladic beginning, the song matches the basic tempo of the album. Once again, Goran Panić conjures up a powerful guitar solo. ‘Selling My Soul’ is the second power ballad. In addition to heavy guitars, the singer is accompanied by piano and strings. Or should we say semi-ballad, as it gets significantly heavier from the middle onwards. Assignment power through from the start with ‘Call For Heaven’. The tempo is kept really high on ‘Angel Of Berlin’. It’s one of the heaviest songs, but without neglecting the melodic elements. The whole thing is crowned by a polyphonic chorus followed by a guitar solo. Shortly before the end comes the title track, ‘With The End Comes Silence’. Once again, there is a ballad-like intro before it becomes epic and anthemic. The last regular song, ‘The Curtain Falls’, is once again characterised by hard guitar riffs and powerful drums. And for me, the bonus track ‘Endlessly’ is one of the highlights of the album. As Diego Valdez’s duet partner, we hear the singer Maria Ledi Jose Pot, who also comes from Argentina. A worthy finale.

‘With The End Comes Silence’ is an extremely successful Power Metal album. Even after more than thirty years in the music business and six full-length albums, Assignment still sound fresh. You can really hear the fun the musicians have with their music. And they want to share that fun with their fans.
