Yorkshire alt-rock sextet, Beauty School, today release their new single, ‘When I’m Feeling Down’.
‘When I’m Feeling Down’ is a poignant reflection on the stillness that lingers between life’s louder chapters—those moments between jobs, between tours, or between milestones where uncertainty and introspection creep in. Dan Shaw (guitar) wrote the song during one of these quieter stretches, while his wife was away for work and he was left with a long to-do list and too much time to think. “I was between jobs, the band was quiet and we wanted to sell our house,” he recalls. It was a period of emotional weight, compounded by the lingering grief of losing his grandparents. Yet, rather than wanting sympathy, Shaw hoped his wife could enjoy her time away, exploring a new city without carrying the burden of his sadness back home.
Musically, the song marks an evolution for the band, building on the rhythmic foundations laid in earlier tracks like ‘PSJ’ and ‘Evergreen’. Charlie Thomas (drums) explains, “I took a lot from 90s American radio rock, drawing from the likes of Third Eye Blind, into the drum parts.” The result is a track that maintains a relentless pulse – never letting up, pulsing with the quiet strength it takes to carry on.
Self-proclaimed “Slam Dunk Festival born and bred”, the six-piece spent their formative years deeply embedded in the Leeds rock scene – cutting their teeth under a host of different monikers and through various lineup changes on the journey towards crafting the signature anthemic Beauty School sound. Since firmly establishing themselves as Yorkshire’s true answer to Midwest emo, they’ve grown into a real force on the live circuit having toured with rock titans The Wonder Years, Hot Mulligan, State Champs and Bowling For Soup alongside festival appearances at Slam Dunk, Download and 2000 Trees.
With an as-yet-unannounced sophomore album whispered about for later in the year, Beauty School look set to make good on their ever-growing promise and lthe essons learned via their relentless work ethic.
