“Aska”
This month we travel north to the music rich country of Sweden. If you travel north and follow along the Skellefteå River about 15 kilometers from the Bothnian Bay open sea you will come to the city of Skellefteå where you can find the female fronted band Aska. If you like heavy, doomy, bluesy rock and metal, you will want to check out Aska.
Before the band came into being, 3 musicians played together in a band called Derelict Dead which was basically a Misfits cover band. This trio of musicians was Mattias Marklund (Vintersorg/Otyg/TME) on guitar and backing vocals, Simon Lundström (Vintersorg/Blister Bigade/TME) on bass and Fredrik Nilsson (Otyg) on drums. The trio began writing their own original music and the seeds were planted.
About December of 2015, the trio set out to find a vocalist for the still unnamed project. They did an acoustic jam with one Johanna Lundberg and they knew instantly that they did not need to look any further.
Early in 2016, Niklas Viklund (Stardog/The Spacious Minds) joined them on guitar and their line-up was complete. Aska was born.
They quickly completed writing songs and recorded a 4-song self-titled EP. They were quickly signed by the Greek label, Sound Effect Records. The band played their first live show together in August of 2017 in Stockholm-800 kilometers south of their hometown.
In 2018, they entered the studio to record their first full-length release. At this very moment, that endeavor is being mixed and the band is hoping for an early 2019 release. At that time, they are eager to hit the road in support of the release.
