Singer Kirsten Jørgensen and bassist Stein Sund founded the Norwegian Death/Doom Metal band Evig Natt in 2023. Initially as a studio project. Shortly afterwards, drummer Harald Magne Revheim joined the band. A demo with six songs was released in 2004. The debut album ‘I Am Silence’ was released in 2007. It featured five of the demo songs and two new ones. Two more albums followed later. However, it has been ten years since the self-titled third album was released. The band was not inactive and played several live shows. But then the drummer moved to Asia. Family and professional commitments and later the Covid pandemic also significantly derailed the creative songwriting process. In 2024, they were able to recruit Tom Andre Enge (also guitarist with Einherjer) as their drummer. After that, things moved faster again. Now the fourth studio album, ‘Vaketimen’ (English: ‘The Vigil Hour’), is complete. I got to know Evig Natt in 2016 when they performed at the Metal Female Voices Fest in Belgium.

‘Shimmer’ is a short intro with electric piano and strings. It’s not until ‘Last Of The Light’ starts seamlessly that things get heavy. Fast riffs and bassist Stein Sund’s bitterly angry growls dominate at first. Kirsten Jørgensen’s ethereal vocals form a strong contrast to this. In the middle, piano and strings provide some contemplation. ‘Death’ is also dominated by hard riffs. Kirsten’s vocals are rougher, but still sound seductive. They alternate with the growls, sometimes as a duet. ‘Når Lyset Svikte’ (in English, ‘When the Light Goes Out’) begins with a piano introduction, before strings and heavy guitar create a mixture of Epic and Metal. Calm sounds predominate. The instrumental interlude ‘Gråtaslaget’ is a traditional Norwegian piece of music. Here it serves as a transition to the powerful ‘Sorrow My World’. The riffs literally roll out of the speakers and spread gloom. This is further intensified by growls. Only the female clean vocals provide a touch of lightness. ‘In The Darkness’ is a short, dark ballad in which Kirsten Jørgensen’s vocals are accompanied minimalistic by piano chords and strings. ‘Eahparas’ is a term from Sami folklore and mythology. Translating it into English does not seem to be so easy. It means something like ‘spirit of a dead (newborn) child’ or ‘restless child ghost’. The song begins with quiet guitar chords accompanied by subtle drumming. Kirsten’s soulful vocals are once again impressive, contrasting sharply with Stein’s angry growls. ‘Tallemaja’ also has references to Scandinavian folklore. The literal translation is ‘Pine Marie’ and refers to a seductive female forest spirit. Hard riffs introduce the song. Then, however, it becomes quiet and ‘forest spirit’ Kirsten Jørgensen seduces the listener with her enchanting voice. The growls, however, sound less seductive. The closing song ‘At The End Of The Night’ also features a piano introduction. The piano later accompanies the ethereal vocals together with strings. An enchanting ballad to bring the album to a close.

The album ‘Vaketimen’ lives up to its name. The term describes a very specific, emotional concept – a quiet, dark but intimate atmosphere of grief and farewell. And every single song on the album reflects these emotions. It leaves the listener in an extremely contemplative mood. And I think that’s exactly the mood Evig Natt want to convey here. And the band succeeds brilliantly.
