With Final Coil‘s hard-hitting, high energy new EP, 1994, gathering critical acclaim from across the board – including a 10/10 review in Powerplay Rock And Metal Magazine – the Leicester band have unveiled a new video for its incendiary opening track, ‘Instant Fix‘. Featuring the drumming talents of ex-Therapy? man, Graham Hopkins, 1994 sees Final Coil looking back to the time that ignited their passion for music and inspired them to create. Frontman Phil Stiles explains the origins of ‘Instant Fix’, the ideas behind the video that accompanies it and touches on the whole concept of the 1994 EP…

“‘Instant Fix’ is a really old song that was originally mooted for Persistence of Memory. The lyrics, which are pretty dark, touch upon addictive / impulsive behaviours and the impact they have on the people around you. I tightened them a little from its earliest incarnation, but to a large extent it’s the song I first brought to the band in 2014 or thereabouts.
Musically, you can feel that it still links to the band’s early EPs. You could sense that, through Closed to the Light and into Persistence of Memory, I was being pulled in a more ethereal, proggy direction but, at the same time, I couldn’t quite give up the blazing intensity of songs like ‘Endgame‘, ‘Fallen‘, or ‘Daylight Fades‘ – and that juxtaposition still sits at the heart of Final Coil today. Even Persistence had a couple of songs like that – ‘Corruption‘ and ‘In Silent Reproach‘ – but ‘Instant Fix’ just felt like a bridge too far, sadly.
The video was really fun to do. In doing this 1994 concept, I really wanted to go all in, producing videos, artwork, and even packaging that harked back to an era where music was really just… cool. For this clip, I used stock footage and, although there is a loose theme to it, it feels like one that’s fun to simply let the viewer interpret.
Honestly, I love the fact that ‘Instant Fix’ finally found a home – especially because Graham Hopkins just got the vibe and did an amazing job providing the foundation. He was such a pleasure to work with and I hope we get the chance to do something together again in the future. For now, I hope people will enjoy both the clip and the song.”
