Feira de Santana is the second largest city in the Brazilian state of Bahia. The Metal band GaiaBeta was founded here in 2017 by singer Marcos Diantoni. Musically, the band is influenced by genre heavyweights such as Iron Maiden, Dio and Black Sabbath. They have since been honoured twice with national music awards. They have also performed at major Metal events in their home country. Now the debut album ‘Gate Of GaiaBeta’ is finally being released.

‘The Pharaoh’s Return’ starts with an epic intro before the guitar riffs kick in. A calm mid-tempo song. About halfway through, the tempo picks up with a melodic guitar solo and increases into the high-speed range. In ‘Get Your Freedom’, the drums really get going straight away. But the medium speeds still dominate here too. Only the guitar solo sets a higher tempo. In ‘Second Flame’, the guitars screech before very rhythmic riffs dominate the song. It reminds me a bit of Manowar. Strong, clear vocal lines are underpinned by deeper choruses. ‘Hands Of Revenge’ is initially characterised by balladesque acoustic guitars. But then calm riffs bang again. At the beginning of ‘Innocent Land’, we first hear a chorus that sounds like indigenous singing. Later, we hear a great mid-tempo Metal anthem with another strong guitar solo. The tempo is increased on ‘Chains Of The Ghosts (The Rebellion)’. Especially the drums drive forward. ‘A Sad Story’ is initially characterised by acoustic guitars underpinned by the sound of the sea and very calm vocals. Later, hard guitar riffs kick in. A great power ballad. The singer can demonstrate his wide vocal range here. In the second half, the balladic realm is then temporarily abandoned and it’s off into high-speed mode. ‘Victory Is Coming’ is a short instrumental anthemic interlude in which the two guitarists in particular show off their skills. In keeping with the title ‘The Last Warriors’, the Brazilians show themselves to be fighters. Field trumpets and battle scenes introduce the song. It can definitely be categorised as a battle anthem. Two bonus songs follow: Hard, deep riffs characterise ‘Ashes From The Stars’. Catchy melodies can be heard later on. I don’t think I need to mention it anymore; the guitar solos are excellent. The album ends with the fast-paced Metal anthem ‘Back To The Past (Nevermore)’.

On ‘Gate Of GaiaBeta’, GaiaBeta celebrate melodic Power Metal for almost one hour. In addition to the bands mentioned at the beginning, I would also name Hammerfall and Helloween as influences. They have an excellent singer in Marcos Diantoni. Both guitars, the bass and the drums really put him in the limelight. Both guitarists (Lennon Kitaro and Fabio Mesquita) shine again and again with strong guitar solos. A more than convincing debut album. GaiaBeta continue the tradition of bands such as Angra, Shaman, Almah, Tierramystica, Hibria and Shadowside.
