God’s Funeral is a Spanish Death/Doom Metal band, founded in 2016 in the Catalan harbour city of Tarragona. According to the press release, the sound ranges from Death/Doom with faster Death and Black Metal influences to Funeral Doom. The list of releases is relatively manageable, apart from the demo ‘El Cristo de las trincheras’ (2017) and the EP ‘Salmos de muerte’ (2020), only a few songs have been released on split EPs so far. ‘El Despertar Dels Morts’ is therefore the debut album.
You can hear it right from the first song ‘Ara Que Torna El Silenci’, the Spaniards sing in their mother tongue. And I assume this is Catalan. But I’m not sure about that. Anyway. Dark sounds and bitterly evil, but nevertheless calm growls dominate the sound. Every now and then the growls even sound in two voices. However, ethereal-sounding female vocals can also be heard in the background. Unfortunately, I was unable to find out who contributed to these. The violin later on is played by guest musician Núria Luis. At just over thirteen minutes, this is also the longest song on the album. ‘Itaca’ is also characterised by brute but also calm sound violence. Some deep bass lines reinforce the gloom. Although the song is a little shorter, it still has a length in the double-digit minute range. ‘La Processó De Les Ombres’ starts with calm, sometimes quite harsh drum rolls. Very decelerated doom, even when the guitar kicks in later. The violin once again becomes one of the most important melody-leading instruments. The nasty growls start right at the beginning of ‘El Despertar Dels Morts’, initially accompanied by heavily distorted guitar and accentuated drum beats. Later, hard and clear guitar chords can be heard. The flute sounds obviously come from the synths. The growls almost become shouts. The album ends with the shortest song on the album – ‘Fossa Comuna’. Nevertheless, it still lasts almost seven and three quarters minutes. Clear guitar chords can also be heard here, but these are then crushed by the devilish growls.
‘El Despertar Dels Morts’ features five decelerated Death / Doom Metal songs with excess length. The sound has a strong tendency towards Funeral Doom. The gloom is further emphasised by the violin playing. And yet I find the individual songs varied. The Catalans manage to build up a thrilling arc of tension.
