A Chat with ABORTED

You know that feeling you get when you sit by the phone, waiting impatiently for THE call? That’s exactly how I felt as the time for this skype interview was approaching. Butterflies in the stomach and all.
I was expecting Sven, but to my surprise Stefano was the one who called.
I played it cool. He apologized on Sven’s behalf. I said let’s improv and we did.
He didn’t even have to play it cool because he really is. I watched and learned.

– Thank YOU for the interview. I’m sorry if you wanted to ask Sven some specific questions he he, I’ll do my best.
-I was in fact planning to ask if he finds it hard to head bang without hair but oh well 🙂

8:28 : One minute into the interview I made Stefano laugh.
We’re gonna do just fine.
-Ok! Question one! I was recently looking back at my blog, pictures and artwork from the past and I went ‘oh my, what was I thinking?’ Do you ever look back at your work and go “oh my, what was I thinking?”
-Nice question! Hmm, I wouldn’t know, probably I would say no, but I am sure there might be a couple things which we could be like ‘what were we thinking?’ hehe, but I think nothing relevant anyway 🙂
-We see a lot of metal bands putting a lot of effort and pay a lot of attention to the detail when it comes to their artwork. How important do you think artwork is for a metal band?
-I think artwork is relevant more than ever because we now see it pretty much everywhere – physical copies, merch, online. I know that you can never judge a book by its cover, but let’s face it, it is the first thing a fan usually sees about a release or a band (think of social media and the various websites). Plus, I also I guess it’s another side of the band’s artistic message.

–The band has designed and released a card game along with necrotic manifesto. We are used to seeing all kinds of merch but this was completely innovating. How did you guys come up with such a brilliant idea?
-I guess this is a question for the rest of the guys, mainly Sven as I was not in that line up haha! What I can say, these days it’s always recommended to come up with original ideas that could attract the fans, letting them have fun especially with such an interactive item like a card-game.
And Aborted-based, what’s better than that!
-Do you think Sven finds it hard to head bang without any hair? 😉
-I believe he does an excellent job! Plus he runs all over the stage all the time, so hair would be just bothering (lol).
-hahaha agreed. Now, Stefano, you have been playing bass guitar for 10 years and were in several bands so far. Is there anything you regret NOT doing career-wise?
-I am pretty happy with what I’ve achieved so far and tbh I also feel a bit lucky for getting to do what I like consistently through time. The goal is to keep doing this as long as possible 🙂
-When it comes to personal life, did you have to sacrifice a lot to be a professional musician?
-Not really, I always had the people around me pushing for this and motivating me. The hardest thing is when you’re away from home and you miss your family, but as soon as I’m back I just want to go back on tour so haha!
8:52 -We always seem to want what we cannot have at that time. Human nature 🙂 What happens when sudden inspiration hits? Do you take notes and write music or lyrics on scraps of paper, napkins at a pub, word documents, phone notepads?
-Usually the best ideas always pop up when you don’t have any paper or even better your instrument at hand! And when you have ‘em, it just goes away, so better stick close to your gear when the epiphany hits. Sometimes I record myself humming riffs (yes, here’s something I might look back to and be like ‘oh my God…’ especially re-listening to myself!!)
-I’m sure these are the best parts of a musician’s life. The unpolished recordings on a crappy phone that no one else knows about. To me that sounds exciting!
Let’s talk horror! The band always incorporated hints and elements of horror films to the songs and albums. Are you also into that genre? And if so, what makes a good horror movie a really good horror movie?
-We are all pretty much horror movie fans! I think the best horror movie is the one that that gives you the thrills throughout the movie and not necessarily gratuitous gore, and should always have a good, entertaining plot/story. My favorite ones are Reanimator, Return of the Living Dead and The first 3 Nightmare movies. I have to say though, of the recent ones I really loved The Ritual, Hereditary and A Quiet Place.
-You just gave me the best “to watch list” thanks mate. Now after I’m done watching those, say I wanna take the edge off and learn how to play bass guitar. Are you available for sessions? And if so how do your potential student reach you?

“Please don’t hate me” he said.
“I think I scheduled another interview at the same time”

– Yes, I regularly teach bass classes and if anyone reading this is a bass player, do reach out! I usually go with Skype or one to one on tour or in person in Rome.
-Tell us everything we need to know about the band’s upcoming shows/tours/album releases.
Future plans – the album is scheduled to be out on Sep 21st, and we’ll start our Australian tour with The Black Dahlia Murder on that very day. Before that we’ll have a few headline shows in New Zealand and Nov/Dec we’re going on a headline tour with Cryptopsy, Benighted and Cytotoxin!!
