What was the beginning pint for your music career? How did it all start?

St1: The first real band I was in was a small garage band in the Inland Empire of California. We mostly played dirty Thrash Metal in back yards and garages. Eventually, we played the Whiskey a Go Go, and I was permanently hooked for life.

Was there any bumps on the road? What kind of challenges did you have to deal with?

St1: To be fair, the hardest part of having a band is having fellow mates and musicians that hold a similar drive. Working as a team is imperative!!! And when half or more of the band doesn’t want the same thing or can’t put in similar effort, it drags the project down.

What was the most fulfilling and satisfying moment so far?

St1: The list is diverse and long. Contortion has played many great shows in many stellar locations. Our recent tour in Europe is a stellar mile stone. Yet, performing on Knottfest & Mayhem back in 2015 were also a lot of fun!

How would you describe the music that you typically create?

St1: Versatile or “contorted” metal. We are influenced by so many different ideas, bands, and musical genres, we try to incorporate what we can when we can. Blending everything into a viable sound and style of our own.

What is your creative process like?

St1: It changes from song to song. But, typically, we begin with one solid riff we love… and I go around the room to see what anyone has to offer to that… then we pick and chose what feels natural yet unique. Some songs can take months or years to write this way. Lmao

If you could change anything about the industry, what would it be?

St1: Greedy fakes that take money from bands and offer nothing in return. Like fake managers, labels, etc. It’s a drain on artists that are already broke and struggling. F*cking vampires.

If you were asked to give a piece of advice to upcoming bands, what would that be?

St1: Unless you literally have nothing else… don’t do it.

What has been the best performance of your career so far?

St1: Of all the shows I’d do again, 2 come to mind….
First is Knottfest. Getting to share the stage, and then hang Backstage with some of our favorite bands was a dream come true.
Second would be the latest tour, when we arrived in Sarajevo. The place was packed, and they lost their minds!!! It was an amazing night with so many great new fans and friends.

If you didn’t become a musician, what would you be doing now?

St1: Well, I did go to college to become a teacher… so, probably be teaching literature or government to kids right now. Lol

What is new with the band at the moment?

St1: We are taking a small break after one hell of a year. The new album “The Common Thread” dropped this year, and we had a couple of tours that drained us.
So, at the moment, we are back in the studio working on a couple new songs, edits for live vid footage, potentially releasing a live album from the EU Tour, and working out plans for 2025. 🙂

What are you currently working on and would like to share with the world?

St1: We have only just begun the writing process for a future album. So, little to share on that front. But we discussed a couple other tracks we might release as singles….
Also, in negotiations right now for South American and European tours for 2025! So, stay tuned for that.
