Overthrown
Out: 21st November 2025
Playing time: 01:10:04

Brace yourselves! Formidable Melbourne hard rock trio King’s Vengeance is set to ignite the music scene and shatter speakers with the release of their highly anticipated debut album, ‘Overthrown,’ scheduled for release on November 21, 2025.

High praise indeed. Can the Australian band’s album live up to the marketing hype? The album is about seventy minutes long and features eleven songs. ‘King’s Vengeance’ is also the name of a song on Thin Lizzy’s 1975 album ‘Fighting’. Thin Lizzy are listed as an influence alongside Judas Priest and Soundgarden. But the Irish band always had two guitarists. The Australians are just a trio with one guitar. How long King’s Vengeance have been around remains unclear, probably since around 2021/2022.

The opening title track, ‘Overthrown,’ starts with erratic drums and erratic guitars. The vocals, however, seem less erratic. The guitar solo, on the other hand, seems hectic. At the beginning of ‘Burn It Down,’ distorted but melodic guitar sounds can be heard. The calm vocals contrast the harshness a little. The guitars sound even more distorted at the beginning of ‘Mystery’. Overall, there is more punch here. This is also because the drums are much more to the fore. The guitar solo also adds more intensity, while the bass provides a solid foundation. But the drums have room for improvement, as ‘Down’ proves from the very first beat. Overall, the song is less fast, but catchy and just as energetic. A powerful bass line introduces ‘Keep Moving’. The guitars sound funky, with a pinch of Blues Rock. ‘Saviour’ is the first of three songs with a playing time of over eight minutes. It opens with hard drum and guitar sounds. Then it calms down at first. Later, quiet, melodic and harder or faster sections alternate. In ‘Enemies’, the drums and guitar riffs really drive the singer forward. The ballad ‘Home’ is also longer than eight minutes. At first, plucked acoustic-sounding guitars can be heard, which continue to dominate later on. The crowning glory is a powerful guitar solo; at times, it seems as if the guitar is the second vocal part. ‘Lie’ is an intense song in which the tempo picks up a little after a mid-tempo introduction. Is ‘The Gathering Of Armies/Day Of Glory’ a double song? At the very least, it is the longest song on the album. The intro sounds very distorted, then almost majestic-sounding riffs kick in. It is noteworthy that the longest song is also the only one without any vocals. After a very calm, almost ballad-like interlude, the intensity increases again towards the end. The closing track, ‘Let Go’, is also varied. After a contemplative introduction, it gets heavier but remains relatively calm. Only towards the end does the guitar solo temporarily increase the tempo a little.

Well, I had imagined setting the music scene to ignite to be a little different. And my speakers and headphones weren’t in danger of bursting either. Despite everything, King’s Vengeance have released a thoroughly good album. The influences mentioned at the beginning shine through again and again. But the band creates its own sound, far away from any mainstream. A little Metal, a little Funk, a little Grunge, a little Blues/Rock. Without getting lost in the process. And thus expects listeners to engage intensively with the music.
