Melodic Doom Metal from Turin (Piedmont, Italy) – that’s La Cerva. Founded – yes, when? The first sign of life on Facebook dates from April this year. So the band should have been founded sometime in 2024 or 2025. I found a somewhat better-known name, Daniele Porfido – guitarist of the Italian Gothic Rock band Dismal. His bandmates also seem to be no unknowns in the Italian Metal scene. Anyway, the self-titled debut EP will be released at the end of May. And a full-length album is planned for 2026.
The EP starts with ‘Cosmic Down’. Hard riffs and powerful drumming accompany Steve Pan’s angry growls. But there are also clear vocal sections. Later on, the drums and guitar riffs drive mercilessly forward. ‘New Eclipse’ is a relatively fast song by Doom terms. Beautiful guitar melodies can also be heard from time to time. The vocals later on sound quite lively at times. With its devilishly nasty growls, ‘Stardust’ is highly menacing for long stretches. The quieter finale is obviously sung in the local language, Italian.
I really like the debut EP from La Cerva. Singer Steve Pan vocally serves both parts of the Beauty and the Beast. This contradiction is also reflected in the instrumentation. Beautiful guitar melodies alternate with brute force. La Cerva thus set a first impressive mark in the Doom Metal area.
