Maliant are a new Metal band from Italy. Three of the four musicians (Larry Ozen, Kyrah Aylin and Francesco Caputo) played or play in the Italian Symphonic Metal band Elegy of Madness, which most recently released the impressive album ‘XI’ in October 2023. Guitarist Valerio Edward De Rosa is, among others, active with Embrace of Souls (Italy). The band was founded in early 2025 and has been working on their first studio album ever since. It will be released under the title ‘Oracle’ in January 2026.
In ‘Annihilation’, the riffs just blast the listener’s ears. The first thing you hear from singer Kyrah Aylin are bitterly angry growls, before she later beguiles you with her clear singing voice. ‘Elementary’ continues with hard-hitting guitars and occasional Double Bass attacks. This contrasts with the ethereal vocals. But even these become harsher at times. Bells and a fade-in vocal open ‘Rise And Fall’. Despite the hard riffs and drum passages, the song has an anthem-like quality, especially in the chorus. However, Kyrah repeatedly lets out her abysmally evil growls. But she shows that she also feels at home in the high soprano range. During the hectic guitar solos, however, the anthem-like impact is over. ‘Stigmata’ starts with some sound experiments followed by clear guitar chords. It remains melodic later on as well. The singer surprises with a dark timbre, alternating with high soprano vocals. A mostly very melodic song with a slightly symphonic orientation. ‘Entropy’ is also one of the quieter songs. With lots of melodic vocal interludes. But also, with harsh spoken vocals and some screams. ‘Desert Prayer’ is a short, quiet, almost ballad-like interlude in which Kyrah Aylin experiments a little with her voice. In keeping with the title ‘The Ritual Fire’, you can hear a wood fire crackling. But then the brutal forces of nature return, which Kyrah counters with her enchanting soprano. But who is the deep male speaking voice? I don’t know, but it’s an interesting design element. ‘Mirror Of Deception’ is hard and anthemic with a symphonic touch. Once again, the singer switches seemingly playfully between evil growls, harsh screams and seductive soprano vocals. Synth sound effects can be heard again, accompanied by a heavily distorted voice. This is how ‘Cyber 9’ begins, before the heavy guitars push their way to the forefront. And once again, the melodic vocals form a strong contrast to this. The closing track, ‘The Witches’ Brew’, is also dominated by hard, sometimes hectic riffs. Kyrah Aylin screams, shouts and growls her heart out one last time. But she masters the interplay of ‘Beauty and the Beast’ perfectly in her dual role.
Those who expected ‘Oracle’ to be a Symphonic Metal masterpiece à la Elegy of Madness may be disappointed. There is too much musical brute force to be heard. The singer’s numerous growls contribute to this in particular. Maliant have dedicated themselves to Modern and Alternative Metal. And in this genre, the Italians have indeed released a masterpiece. Many unwieldy passages alternate with melodic sections. And Kyrah Aylin interprets this musical contradiction with her vocals. The vocal diversity she demonstrates is impressive.
