Mares of Thrace deliver a crushing blow with their latest single, “Anticipatory Grief,” a
relentless hard rock track that embodies the raw chaos of emotional turmoil. Following their
recent single “Complicated Grief,” this new release continues their exploration of grief’s
complexities, diving headfirst into the suffocating anxiety of mourning what has not yet been lost. The release is the third single from their upcoming album The Loss, out May 16 via Artoffact Records.
“Anticipatory Grief” opens with a menacing guitar riff that bleeds tension. Thérèse Lanz’s
shredding chords snarl through layers of distortion, while Casey Rodgers’ punishing drum
strikes create a crushing, unrelenting backbone. The track builds steadily, layering dense walls of feedback and gritty overdrive that mimic the overwhelming weight of anticipatory grief.
Therese Lanz comments, “The songs on The Loss follow the sequence of Elisabeth Kubler
Ross’ famous stages of grief, but in my reading on the topic I encountered descriptions of very specific flavours of grief that are often dismissed or not considered as such– bonus grief, if you will? The last single, Complicated Grief, refers to grieving someone or something who you have mixed emotions toward, so the grief also contains relief in it, and/or guilt for feeling said relief. Anticipatory Grief is when you see the loss coming a long way off, and you have this endless, terrible ocean of time to pre-grieve as you watch the inevitable approaching.”

Lanz’s vocal performance is feral and agonizing, channeling a primal sense of loss with guttural intensity. Each scream feels like an emotional purge, teetering between rage and despair. The song’s structure echoes this volatile energy; moments of eerie quiet appear suddenly, pulling the listener into a disorienting stillness before the band lunges back into relentless chaos.
Rodgers’ drumming is thunderous yet precise, punctuating each shift with explosive cymbal
crashes and relentless double-kick rolls. This furious energy propels “Anticipatory Grief”
forward, a storm of sound that refuses to relent. As the song surges toward its climax, Lanz’s searing guitar solo cuts through the chaos, a jagged melody that feels like a cry from deep within the void.
“Anticipatory Grief” is not just a song, it’s an experience, a visceral confrontation with dread
and inevitability. With their signature blend of sludge, doom, and noise rock, Mares of Thrace deliver a track that is as emotionally draining as it is exhilarating.
The track’s bleak harrowing sets the stage for their forthcoming album, The Loss, out May 16 via Artoffact Records.

ABOUT MARES OF THRACE
Canadian mixed-race mixed-gender duo Mares of Thrace deal in a brand of heaviness that draws as much from noise rock and hardcore as it does from the doom metal they’re commonly grouped with. The band came roaring back to life in 2022 after a considerable hiatus; while 2012’s The Pilgrimage (released on Canada’s Sonic Unyon Records) catapulted them onto the world stage, garnering a premier on Pitchfork and praise in Decibel, Terrorizer, Metal Hammer, and countless other outlets, their current era is fast eclipsing it. Their relentless schedule in support of 2022’s The Exile saw them tour the USA, Canada, and Europe (including a tour with UK doom legends Conan, and stints with Bell Witch, Dopethrone, and KEN mode) and headline a showcase at new “North American Roadburn” festival Prepare the Ground.
The band’s new incarnation sees vocalist and guitarist Trez (hailed as “absolutely riveting, an unrivalled monster of a frontperson” by Exclaim! Magazine) joined by Casey on drums, a multi-instrumentalist and audio engineer whose bona fides include being tapped to replace Gene Hoglan in Zimmer’s Hole.
2025 looks to be their most ambitious year yet, as they prepare to release their fourth full-length album–The Loss– on illustrious label Artoffact Records (home of Kaelan Mikla and GGGOLDDD). Produced by Scott Evans (Sumac, Sleep, Thrice, Covet, Yautja), it is a personal journey through mortality, grief, and losses of various kinds, and a reflection on the universality thereof; its song titles are a nod to the famed stages of grieving coined by psychologist Elisabeth Kubler-Ross.
