AHEAD OF UPCOMING ALBUM ‘THE LOSS’ – OUT MAY 16 – PRE ORDER HERE

Mares of Thrace continue their sonic assault with the release of their latest single,
“Complicated Grief,” the second offering from their upcoming album The Loss, out May 16
via Artoffact Records. Following the harrowing intensity of “The Second Stage: Denial,” this
new track delves even deeper into the raw, unrelenting emotions that define the album’s themes of grief and transformation.

PRE-ORDERS FOR THE LOSS AVAILABLE NOW — PRE-ORDER HERE

“Complicated Grief” is a punishing, slow-burning dirge that erupts into chaotic fury, embodying the crushing weight of unresolved loss. With Thérèse Lanz’s jagged, noise-drenched riffs and guttural, soul-shredding vocals colliding against Casey Rodgers’ pummeling drum work, the track is a visceral experience; both suffocating and cathartic. Layers of distortion and eerie dissonance give way to moments of stark, unsettling silence, capturing the disorienting nature of grief itself.

With The Loss, Mares of Thrace carve out a space that is both deeply personal and universally resonant. The album follows the band’s acclaimed releases The Pilgrimage (2012), long-listed for the Polaris Music Prize, and The Exile (2022), solidifying their reputation as a force in the world of sludge, doom, and noise rock. Now backed by Artoffact Records, the duo is prepared tounleash their most devastating and ambitious work yet.

As the album unfolds, it becomes clear that this isn’t just an album; it’s a reckoning. Mares of Thrace take their signature blend of sludge, doom, and noise rock to new extremes, embracing a sonic landscape that is as suffocating as it is hypnotic. The band’s ability to balance heaviness with nuance ensures that every track leaves a mark, whether through bone-rattling riffs, piercing vocal anguish, or the haunting spaces in between.

The release of The Loss will be accompanied by select live dates, bringing the band’s
confrontational and cathartic energy to audiences across North America. Known for their
blistering performances and unrelenting sonic onslaught, Mares of Thrace promise an
experience that is as raw and unfiltered as the music itself. Tour dates and further
announcements will be revealed in the coming weeks.

ABOUT MARES OF THRACE

Canadian mixed-race mixed-gender duo Mares of Thrace deal in a brand of heaviness that draws as much from noise rock and hardcore as it does from the doom metal they’re commonly grouped with. The band came roaring back to life in 2022 after a considerable hiatus; while 2012’s The Pilgrimage (released on Canada’s Sonic Unyon Records) catapulted them onto the world stage, garnering a premier on Pitchfork and praise in Decibel, Terrorizer, Metal Hammer, and countless other outlets, their current era is fast eclipsing it. Their relentless schedule in support of 2022’s The Exile saw them tour the USA, Canada, and Europe (including a tour with UK doom legends Conan, and stints with Bell Witch, Dopethrone, and KEN mode) and headline a showcase at new “North American Roadburn” festival Prepare the Ground.

The band’s new incarnation sees vocalist and guitarist Trez (hailed as “absolutely riveting, an unrivalled monster of a frontperson” by Exclaim! Magazine) joined by Casey on drums, a multi-instrumentalist and audio engineer whose bona fides include being tapped to replace Gene Hoglan in Zimmer’s Hole

2025 looks to be their most ambitious year yet, as they prepare to release their fourth full-length album–The Loss– on illustrious label Artoffact Records (home of Kaelan Mikla and GGGOLDDD). Produced by Scott Evans (Sumac, Sleep, Thrice, Covet, Yautja), it is a personal journey through mortality, grief, and losses of various kinds, and a reflection on the universality thereof; its song titles are a nod to the famed stages of grieving coined by psychologist Elisabeth Kubler-Ross.
