It was just two months ago that the EP “In This Silence” by the Hungarian Symphonic Metal band Meteora was released. From my point of view, there was a clear increase compared to the third album ‘…Of Shades And Colours’. Just like on ‘In This Silence’, there are four songs on the follow-up ‘Broken Mind’. So, let’s hear if the band around singer Noémi Holló could continue the positive development.
The title track ‘Broken Mind’ is right at the beginning of the EP. A more than dramatic opening, with evil growls (Máté Fülöp), followed by the high soprano of Noémi Holló. There is a lot of epic music in the background. Especially the band’s own choir. The guitars bang out of the speakers, sometimes disharmoniously. More melodies can then be heard on ‘Morningstar’, Noémi’s vocals sound very melodic and she is once again accompanied by the choir. As a contrast, the angry growls can be heard again and again, but also the clear vocals of Atilla Király. Later, the guitars literally race. Quiet string parts follow, which are abruptly interrupted by the growls. These are extreme contrasts that Meteora celebrate here. ‘Elysion’ is also strongly characterised by the interplay between hard, fast riffs and beautiful melodies. Vocally, we first hear the keyboardist Atilla Király. In between, Noémi Holló’s soprano is heard again. The epic ‘In My Name’ starts quietly with piano sounds. This is accompanied by the Holló / Király duet. Later, however, the vocal competition between ‘The Beauty and the Beast’ follows again.
Even with “…Of Shades And Colours” I criticised the fact that the Hungarians stepped into every Symphonic/Gothic Metal trap. But with the EPs ‘In This Silence’ and currently ‘Broken Mind’, that has changed. Of course, symphonic epicness is still part of the sound, but the metallic heaviness dominates. Meteora have obviously taken the right path. Even though the mix of styles is quite large with influences from Thrash-, Death-, Prog- and Symphonic-Metal, Meteora don’t get bogged down. Instead, the musicians manage to combine these influences and thus create their own sound.
