The 2022 album ‘…Of Shades And Colours’ wasn’t quite to my taste. Three years later, Meteora released two EPs (‘In This Silence’ and ‘Broken Mind’), which I liked much better. With ‘Dissonance’, the trilogy is now complete. Only the musicians themselves know whether it will remain at three EPs.

‘Darkest Light’ begins with heavy riffs, later joined by synth strings. And as soon as Noémi Holló’s beguiling vocals kick in, things calm down. Even when Atilla Király adds his clear baritone, not much changes. Only Máté Fülöp’s evil growls remind us that we are listening to a Metal EP. Guitar melodies lead into ‘Shadows Of Ignorance’ before the drums kick in with a frantic tempo increase. Here, too, we hear the interplay between Noémi’s seductive voice and the bitterly angry growls. With the last two songs, Meteora draw a line to their 2020 album ‘Tragedy Of Delusion’. First, we hear the fourth part of the ‘My Reality’ series, entitled ‘Dissonance’, which also gave the EP its name. Here, the riffs bang, the strings and drums sound slightly frantic. But that’s just a taste of the evil growls and the galloping guitars. Only Noémi Holló’s vocals occasionally provide some deceptive calm. The nine-minute epic ‘Witch Hunt’ is part three of the song cycle ‘Tragedy Of Delusion’, after which the Hungarians’ aforementioned second album was named. After the strings provide the introduction, Atilla Király can be heard again, alternating with his two vocal companions. For long stretches, the sound is anthemic, thanks in part to the Meteora choir and occasional melodic guitar solos. In between, the drums drive the music forward. The melody and rhythm changes clearly reveal a strong progressive orientation. A worthy conclusion to the album, which consists of three EPs released in quick succession.

Let’s call it what it is: these three EPs are actually a full-length album. And in my opinion, there has been a significant improvement since ‘…Of Shades And Colours’. Even though Meteora’s basic orientation is clearly rooted in Symphonic Metal, they are significantly harder and also a little more experimental. And that really benefits the sound. They can certainly continue in this vein.
