The Hungarian Symphonic Metal band Meteora has been active since 2010. So there is something to celebrate, the band’s fifteenth anniversary. Many bands release albums on similar occasions, some with new songs but also some with a best-of from the past. With three studio albums and one EP to date, this could certainly be an impressive showcase of their work. Meteora have only opted for an EP with four songs. Since the last album ‘…Of Shades And Colours’ there have also been some changes in the line-up. Meteora are now a sextet, with two guitarists who both joined the band afterwards. However, the album didn’t convince me one hundred per cent. So, I was naturally looking forward to this EP.

The EP starts with the title track ‘In This Silence!’. And I’m a little surprised by the heaviness and the slight thrashy edge. Of course, you can always hear orchestral accompaniment in the background. Above all, bassist Máté Fülöp’s growls make for the heavier overall impression, as do drummer Gábor Kása and the two guitarists with their hard, merciless riffs. The keyboards and the choruses sound quite weird. Melody is mainly provided by the vocals of Noémi Holló and occasionally by Atilla Király, who is particularly convincing with his baritone voice. The song ends completely abruptly. ‘Rebirth’ starts orchestrally. Once again, the drums are booming, sometimes with real double bass attacks. It seems a little less weird, although Noémi’s vocals still sound quite hectic. There are also some angry growls. Towards the end, the two guitarists can show off their skills in a solo. In ‘Free’, things get really melodic, although the growls dominate again and again. But Noémi’s vocals now sound much more catchy. The synth strings are omnipresent. But the Hungarians have obviously saved the best for last. The final ballad ‘Ghosts’ is dominated by calm piano sounds and strings. Noémi’s calm vocals show what a great voice she has. And then we hear a wonderfully harmonious duet by Noémi Holló and Atilla Király. The crowning glory is a strong but calm guitar solo.

I like the EP ‘In This Silence’ much better than ‘…Of Shades And Colours’. Meteora are extremely experimental here. Apart from the concluding ‘Ghosts’, the songs are played very hard and the symphonic bombast is not too much in the foreground.
