Mediterranean symphonic metal grandeur
The band’s figurehead is soprano Marialena Trikoglou, who also founded the band in 2022. One year later, their debut album ‘Celestial Vision’ was released. At the time, I was a little critical of the songwriting, which I felt lacked sufficient variety. Almost three years have passed. The sextet became a quartet. And only three musicians can be seen in the band photo. Now Mystfall present us with their follow-up album, ‘Embers Of A Dying World’.
‘Whispers In The Tempest’ kicks off with plenty of epic bombast accompanied by powerful drums. Marialena Trikoglou’s beguiling soprano sounds clear and powerful. The guitar riffs provide a Metal feeling. The guitar solo also proves worthy of the genre. In ‘Embers Of A Dying World’, the bombastic sound continues, underpinned by plenty of double bass. In addition to catchy vocal passages, Marialena impresses with some enchanting coloratura. The operatic singing is contrasted by evil growls from bandmate Stelios Vrotsakis. Once again, a guitar solo crowns the song. Epic choir singing introduces ‘Guardians Of The Earth’. The drums create pressure and the guitar playing contributes catchy melodies. Calm piano and string sounds introduce the instrumental interlude ‘The Nectar And The Pain’. After briefly powerful and epic choruses, the strings once again provide a contemplative mood. At the beginning of ‘Sleeper In The Abyss’, calm piano sounds can be heard once again. The vocals are also calm and seductive. In between, there are also harder, bombastic sections, but the tempo only increases slightly. The introductory choruses in ‘Fading Memories’ are driven by fast drumming. Apart from a few quieter vocal passages, the tempo is quite high. In addition, Stelios Vrotsakis contributes some growls again. The choir singing at the beginning of ‘Crimson Dawn’ is calm. Marialena’s vocals are also mostly calm. The growls, together with the choirs, occasionally cause a slight increase in tempo. Once again, strings introduce a song. This time it is ‘Cosmic Legends’. The strings remain dominant later on, even though the rhythm section repeatedly provides some heaviness. In contrast, ‘Echoes Of Arcadia’ is hard and fast from the start. But Marialena manages to assert herself convincingly against the instrumentation without her vocals sounding shrill. You have to wait until the last song for a ballad. ‘Remnants Of Tomorrow’ is introduced by spoken, partly whispered words. Later, Marialena Trikoglou manages to bewitch the listener one last time with her voice.
On ‘Embers Of A Dying World’, we hear truly magnificent Symphonic Metal. And the band owes this primarily to their elfin frontwoman Marialena Trikoglou. Fortunately, the songwriting also offers more variety than the debut. Mystfall have clearly improved on their second album.
