Finnish folk metal icons ENSIFERUM today unveil  their official new video for “Fatherland.” The track is taken from their Winter Storm full-length, out now on Metal Blade Records.

Much of the new material for Winter Storm emerged during the COVID lockdown, when ENSIFERUM’s founding guitarist Markus Toivonen set himself the challenge of finding new ways to make music — eventually composing every song except the rousing and anthemic “Fatherland,” written by bassist Sami Hinkka. The addition of singer/organist Pekka Montin’s crystal-clear melodic high notes provided a tremendous boost on 2020’s Thalassic. But on Winter Storm — a fantasy concept narrative penned by Hinkka — Montin’s super-strong voice finds its optimal place in ENSIFERUM’s sound. Bringing to life such grandiose, heroic material, the singer emerges as one of the greatest vocal discoveries of the decade.

Elaborates Hinkka on “Fatherland,” “As so many times earlier, the composing of the song started with a fraction of a melody playing in my head and then grabbing my acoustic guitar and a few minutes later the chorus was done. From there, the song almost formed by itself. This song tells about a remote tribe who has been fighting against the Winter Storm Vigilantes for a long time. A huge singalong chorus and the raw energy that calls everyone into a mosh pit, will guarantee that this will be an awesome live song.”

“…wait was worth it, because the Finns have once again delivered a formidable folk metal album with a subtle death metal note.” – Rock Hard Germany

“…one of the best albums from their nine-studio album catalog.”  – Rock Tribune Belgium

“Folk-infused melodic death metal at its absolute finest, ENSIFERUM are one of Finland’s shining stars and pillars of strength for a reason. Winter Storm is full of epic grandiosity, soaring, muscular melodies and dramatically dynamic storytelling that will fully immerse you in a fantasy world of battles, magic and heroes.”  – This Day In Metal

ENSIFERUM’s recipe for success is as effective as ever, but there’s a risk-taking element to Winter Storm: the interludes allow the band to set the pace for their album, while permitting themselves two long epics.”  – Acta Infernalis

“…a magical, epic and gloomy masterpiece that does what it came here to do. Being better than its older brother, Thalassic.” – Grimm Gent

ENSIFERUM’s Winter Storm shows off their talent for crafting epic, unforgettable music, making this one stand out in their entire discography. If you’re after a metal album that’s both powerful and uplifting, this is the one. You’ll finish it and immediately want to dive back in for another round. Definitely worth giving a listen.”  – The Metal Pit

“…the band sounds fresher in 2024 than it has in a long time.”  – Deaf Forever

Markus Toivonen – guitars, vocals
