“You started a record label at the height of a global pandemic?!”
Such a question has been asked by many to Al Nolan (frontman of Almighty Trigger Happy) and Doug Smart (former keeper of the Oshawa music scene, frontman of Figure Four). In July 2020, the two music industry veterans joined forces to launch a new punk record label, Cursed Blessings during the peak of the global covid-19 pandemic. Although the music industry’s future was hanging in the balance, Smart and Nolan had hope. Eager to “reinvent the safety pin,” Cursed Blessings, is here to bring punk rock up to speed in the current music landscape.
In the span of just over a year, the label’s catalogue quickly grew to include groups such as Dragged In, Choices Made, Almighty Trigger Happy, Seized Up among others. In addition to their own roster, the label is also working on a number of special projects (licencing deals) with artists such as Russ Rankin, Baptized in Blood, Sacrifice & Slaughter, The Filthy Radicals and others. On December 4th, Cursed Blessings is hosting a free “Holiday Hardcore” show at the Bovine Sex Club in Toronto. The show will feature performances from label artists No More Moments, The Slime, Doors & Fours and Mvll Crimes. In addition to exciting performances, there will be prize giveaways and free goodies. Having experienced a great deal of initial buzz, the label signed a physical distribution deal with Cobraside Distribution in Glendale California and a global digital distribution deal with Believe Distribution in Montreal, Quebec. Cursed Blessings’ artists are currently being streamed in over 65 countries on every major digital music platform. Now, the label is once again expanding its ever-growing team, adding Looters, a Canadian publicity and marketing firm into the fold.
One thing is for sure, the future of the up-and-coming label is very bright, recently being named by Now Magazine as the “Best Record Label in Toronto” by their 350K readers in the annual “Readers Choice” awards issue. With many exciting releases to come, Cursed Blessings Records is blazing the trail and ushering in a new era of killer punk rock.
