Exclaim Magazine praised the release by saying “No good riff is wasted here — guitars tear through the mix like valkyries in battle, bestriding Rogers’s pummeling rhythms and Lanz’s commanding growl.” – Paul Blinov, Exclaim Magazine
Mares of Thrace’s Thérèse Lanz (vocals, guitar) comments, “All our records have been labours of love, but this one particularly so (born purely out of a need to riff, written solo, and recorded completely DIY), and I do honestly think it’s our finest work to date. I’m delighted by the reception so far and I couldn’t be more excited to release it, and even more so to play it live.”
Ruthless, volatile and downright nasty, The Exile and accompanying short story are about being cursed to wander without a home for all time. Lyrically, The Exile encompasses both the content of the short story and Lanz’s life between the last record and now. The short story was written by Jana Sloan van Geest (writer on several blockbuster video games including Assassin’s Creed: Origins and Horizon: Zero Dawn) and illustrated by Lanz herself. Lanz also mixed and produced the album.
Described as being, “one of the most satisfying and Earth moving heavy musical expressions of energy in human memory,” by Metal Riot, the album saw support from Brooklynvegan, Decibel, Invisible Oranges, Ghost Cult Magazine, The Tinnitist, idobi Howl, George Strombo and more! Earlier this month Mares of Thrace released the album’s second single ‘All In Her Glory“. The first single “Mortal Quarry” was released in early February.
MORE ABOUT MARES OF THRACE:
Formed in 2009 by Thérèse Lanz (vocals/guitar) and Stef MacKichan (drums), Mares of Thrace released their debut album, The Moulting, the following year. Produced by Sanford Parker (Nachtmystium, Pelican, Yob), it was critically acclaimed and a hit at campus radio, as was its ambitious follow-up The Pilgrimage. Their sophomore album was a three-act Biblically inspired tale weaving the historic melodrama of King David’s relationship with Bathsheba around Lanz’s grinding riffs and MacKichan’s juggernaut percussion. Supporting those albums, the band logged tens of thousands of miles touring across Canada and the USA and received rave reviews from noted publications such as Exclaim Magazine, Decibel, Terrorizer, Blabbermouth, Magnet, and PopMatters.
