Mariusz Duda Reveals More Info About His Upcoming Album Interior Drawings
Lockdown Trilogy as a whole to be released on vinyl and on CD

Mariusz Duda, the artist known as the frontman of Riverside and the man behind Lunatic Soul, has just announced that his new solo album entitled Interior Drawings will be out this year, more precisely on 10th December on the artist’s Bandcamp and on 17th December on all digital platforms, streaming services (Glassville Music), and, traditionally… on cassette tapes (Mystic Production). Interior Drawings is the third and final instalment of the pandemic trilogy started off by Lockdown Spaces, an album had been released by Mariusz Duda in June 2020, which was followed by Claustrophobic Universe in April 2021.

Lockdown Trilogy contains minimalist, instrumental electronic music, enriched only with samples and fragmentary use of voice.

“During the pandemic years 2020-2021, I decided to start a new music project, different from Riverside, different from Lunatic Soul” – says Duda. “I wanted it to draw references from my beginnings as a musician, from the first sounds I played mostly on keyboards, inspired by the works of electronic music artists, which I grew up listening to. I already have an artistic world apart from Riverside, the one of Lunatic Soul, so this time, I decided not to hide behind a pseudonym, but to sign the work with my name.”

Interior Drawings is an album inspired by work, passion, creative process, and a self-imposed “lockdown”.

We’re leaving behind the theme of being locked down because of external factors, which was explored on Lockdown Spaces, and the desire to escape from the chaos of reality, which was the idea behind Claustrophobic UniverseInterior Drawings is an album about… creating an album. It’s a story about what a flow of thoughts looks like, it’s a peek into the mind of someone who has decided to create a project. The “drawing” samples scattered on the album can symbolise anything: writing a novel, painting a picture, directing a film, creating an architectural design, composing an album, or any other creative process which begins with the proverbial “blank page”

“Let’s make it clear, I don’t have only artists in mind. Someone who, say, executes their business plan, is also creating something. But because of my job, I decided to tell the story from my own point of view, highlighting among others the ritual of writing ideas in various notebooks.”

Interior Drawings is a story about alienating yourself voluntarily. About the situations when you want to isolate yourself during the most intense work, no matter what happens outside.

It’s also another subtle reference to childhood. The previous albums saw references to computer games and collecting music on cassette tapes. The newest one is an allusion to creating alternative worlds on the pages of… self-made comic books.

About his own creative process: “it usually starts from a spark, which is a single verbal, graphic or music idea, which leads to a more and more intense flow of thoughts (Racing Thoughts). These, in turn, make their way onto pieces of paper as notes, drawings, or to-do lists (Interior Drawings). When there are enough of them and the apartment starts to drown in scattered bits of paper, it’s time for notebooks. Notebooks are given titles and stories inside become more organised. Often, they take the form of more or less precise geometry – circles, squares, and triangles – filled with words and more specific plans (Shapes in Notebooks). Then comes the time for working with electronic tools (voice recorder, computer), and putting theory into practice, which is more recording and locking myself up in my own world until at least 75% of the work is done (Prisoner by Request). Then comes a crisis, dreaming about a break (Dream of Calm), and feeling like giving up. Fighting my own inner demons and getting back on track is still possible (How to Overcome Crisis) until I finally reach the endgame (Almost Done). And once the work is completed, I’ve passed the finish line, the album has been handed in on time (or, as it’s often the case, a little later than initially planned), I am filled with the strangest but oh so desirable feeling of temporary accomplishment, joy, and inner balance (Temporary Happiness). Naturally, it lasts only until another moment of imbalance, and that’s when the only thing to do is wait for another spark and another flow of thoughts.”

Interior Drawings will be released on December 10th on the artist’s Bandcamp and on December 17th on all digital platforms, streaming services (Glassville Music), and, traditionally… on cassette tapes (Mystic Production)Lockdown Trilogy as a whole will be released on vinyl and on CD
