Coming straight from Brazil, the project called MATHAGAL is a new, heavy, aggressive and original project which addresses themes of rich Brazilian folklore, urban legends and stormy/frightening horror tales, all sung in Portuguese.

Well-known characters, such as Emilia, from Sitio do Pica-Pau Amarelo, the Chupa-Cabras, or even some created for this project, such as Aphastatupi, a bloodthirsty freak who is a reflection of human cruelty, among other characters and themes, will be present in an EP already scheduled for Halloween, October 31st, called “Contos de Meia Noite” (free translation: “Midnight Tales”), in all streaming platforms.

All their originality has everything to make them a great success, following the steps of classics like “Roots” (Sepultura) and “Holy Land” (Angra), by incorporating a lot of Brazilianness in their sound and concept.

The MATHAGAL project comes out of Austin, Texas/USA, from the twisted ideas of Brazilian musician and producer Guilherme “Guigo” Adriano(Homoiousios and The Gee J), who has already been producing music in collaboration with artists from all over the world. Yet the need to create an extremely aggressive project focusing on themes from his home country -without being stuck to labels and genres- was still on his mind.

Also counting on longtime friends and musicians Raphael Jorge (vocals/100 Dogmas) and Juvi Cristofolini (vocals and guitar/Motim), both from Blumenau, Santa Catarina, Brazil, MATHAGAL has just released its first single called “Emilia”, portraying in a creepy way one of the main characters of Monteiro Lobato’s children’s book Sítio do Pica-Pau Amarelo, available – for now – only on the band’s official Youtube channel, but soon it will be released on all digital platforms.

Another important factor for MATHAGAL‘s art is their immersive horror art covers by the Austrian team AI Fantasy Art(@ai.fantasy.art), exploring the darker and more evil side of the characters from the stories.

“Our lyrics are basically things we heard when we were kids and that frightened us too much, all raised to the fifth power in terms of horror”, says Raphael Jorge.

In Juvi‘s words he says that “the result in ‘Emilia’ was extremely brutal and you can be sure that we have a lot more coming from our sick minds” (laughs).

“Brutal! Genius! Addictive! We are facing something – in my opinion – a very original and revolutionary stuff! Keeping the proper proportions, we have a kind of a new “Roots” (Sepultura) coming out of the cage! All this hybrid theme of Brazilian folklore with urban legends and horror, are a full plate for those who like aggressiveness, brutality and conceptual things walking together. Simply superb!”(Johnny Z. – Editor in Chief Metal Na Lata)
