Now or Never were founded in 2012 by former members of Danish Hard Rock band Pretty Maids, Ricky Marx (guitar) and Kenn Jackson (bass), as well as drummer Fabian ‘Ranzo’ Ranzoni from Swiss Heavy Metal band Sultan. Kenn Jackson has left the band meanwhile. Singer Peer Johansson (Fate, The Grandmaster, ex-Dorian Gray, ex-Third Eye) has been on board since this year, as has bassist Guillaume Surroca. Three albums have been released so far, the self-titled debut album in 2013, followed by ‘II’ (2016) and “III” (2020). Now the fourth full-length album, “The Legacy”, is on the way.

After a brief intro with sound gimmicks on ‘Burning Daylight,’ Now or Never really get going. The guitar riffs whip through the airwaves and drummer Ranzo really drives his bandmates forward. The title track ‘Legacy’ starts with a few screams before singer Peer Johansson lets his raspy voice shine. Heavily distorted guitars introduce ‘Accidental Synergy’. But then a storm of riffs and drums hits the listener. The chorus is catchy and easy to sing along to. And Ricky Marx delivers a powerful guitar solo. In a quiet section, he can also be heard on the keyboards. Beautiful and clear guitar licks are followed by hard riffs. Otherwise, ‘The Letter’ is a bit calmer. In ‘Mr Misery’, the steam hammer is brought out again. Riffs and drums drive the song forward. Rhythmic guitar riffs, underpinned by melodic arcs, define ‘Hide Behind The Screen’. The choruses lend the whole thing a certain epic feeling. Now or Never are obviously up for short industrial intros with sound gimmicks, as is the case with ‘Hollow Idol’. But here, too, powerful Rock can be heard. The power ballad ‘Secret Dream’ is introduced by a piano played in pouring thunderstorm rain. Key orchestrations and acoustic guitars follow. Beautiful melodies can be heard. Later, the guitars fry. And what is that awesome guitar solo? In ‘Remember Icarus’, the hard guitar riffs are brought out again. Otherwise, the song moves more in quiet, anthemic realms. Even in ‘How Do You Sleep’, the tempo is only slightly increased. The riffs blast out of the speakers, interspersed with the occasional squeal of dissonant guitars. ‘No One Will Make Me Cry’ puts an end to the fun, however. Guitars and drums drive the song forward. The singer sounds harsher in places than before. ‘Where The Road Ends’ is another contemplative ballad. Clean guitar chords and strings accompany the singer. The chorus is written in the style of a grand anthem, with polyphonic vocals. In contrast, the finale ‘Dive Into The Void’ is a real rock banger.

‘The Legacy’ is a really powerful Rock and Metal album. It captivates with its varied songwriting. From stomping rockers to mid-tempo songs and ballads, it has everything a Metal heart could desire. The rich production and excellent musical performances make for a thoroughly enjoyable listening experience. And exceptional singer Peer Johansson leaves his personal stamp on each individual song.
