Pilgrimage are a Death/Doom Metal band with roots in Malta and the Netherlands. Experienced musicians founded the band in 2018. One year later, I had the opportunity to conduct an interview with Pilgrimage. At that time, it was actually planned for autumn 2019. However, ‘Sigil of the Pilgrim Sun’ was released in 2021. I can’t say why the release of the album completely passed me by. But for the album ‘From Amber To Sun’, which will be released in August, I received a promo request from the band’s current label. I was very pleased to listen to the album intensively.
Calm, clear guitar chords introduce ‘The Cosmic Traveller’. This is followed by hard guitar riffs. Dario Pace Taliana’s voice sounds as if it comes from the deepest depths of the Abyss. But as already shown on Weeping Silence, he also masters the deep, clear vocals. The riffs and melodies on “A Foreboding Menace” are a little faster, but no less gloomy. ‘Whispers On Stellar Seas’ also gives you goosebumps and makes you break out in a sweat; the sound is so abysmally evil. Even Heike Langhans’ ethereal vocals can’t change that. This makes the song seem even more menacing. The same effect is achieved by the cello played by Elianne Anemaat on the short instrumental piece ‘Pilgrim Alone’. Although we almost hear a Death/Doom ballad here. But this is more of an introduction to ‘Crestfallen Tales Of The Sun’. Here, too, the cello playing provides a high degree of melancholy. In ‘Cove Of Wisdom’ and the final title track ‘From Amber To Sun’, Heike Langhans also tries to take us into the abyss with her elfish vocals together with Dario’s evil growls. In between, ‘The Edge Of Memory’ seems almost upbeat.
‘From Amber To Sun’ is bursting with darkness. Especially thanks to the evil growls of Dario Pace Taliana. And Heike Langhans’ vocals also contribute to this. The mostly lower-pitched guitars (Eric Hazebroek, Zain Gauci) and the pumping bass (Sean Pollacco) reinforce this feeling. In addition, drummer Dino Mifsud Lepre provides a steady, calm beat. And let’s not forget the melancholy spread by the cello playing. In my opinion, this is an outstanding Death/Doom Metal album.
