C.K. Baker Band
Find Your Way
Out: September 19th, 2023
Playing time: 37:19

Is it now a band or just a project. At least the C.K. Baker Band was founded by Carlos Baker and Christoph von Storch in 2015. The debut album “Walk Alone” was released in 2019. “Find Your Way” is the duo’s second release and, according to the press release, contains a mixture of Classic Rock, Rhythm and Blues and Folk. It was produced in Chicago by sound engineer Brian. The two were supported by studio musicians from Chicago, who are among the best in their city (press release).

“Find Your Way” is very different music from what I normally listen to. You can already hear that in the first song “Wash Over Me Quickly”. Carlos Baker’s calm vocals are mainly accompanied by guitar and piano. Even when drums and keyboards are joined later, it remains contemplative. And this calmness continues in what follows, whether in Rhythm & Blues (“Ill Prepared”) or the slightly rocking title track “Find Your Way”. Even though “No Turning Back Now” starts with heavily distorted guitars, you can still hear calm Rhythm & Blues with a Folk edge. In “Fixed Up By You” the slide guitar dominates. A little southern rock feeling. This doesn’t change until the end.

“Find Your Way” is an album with many quiet notes. Slide guitar and keyboard passages are somewhat reminiscent of the quiet ballad songs of bands like Allman Brothers Band or Lynyrd Skynyrd. This album should be enjoyed in peace and quiet. Then it grows with every playthrough.
