Lost, Not Hiding

The duo Ammify is probably more of a project than a band. The two are from Perth (Australia). That’s not really true when you read that work on their debut album “Lost, Not Hiding” started in 2022, but it took about two years to complete due to the distance. They simply describe their genre as CineMetal. And now they are planning more videos, live presentations and acoustic performances. But they are still at the beginning.

I asked myself, what is CineMetal? The Australians provide a first answer with “Homesick”. Dark guitar sounds, a singer with an ethereal voice and a calm sound. But I don’t actually hear much metal in this song. It sounds more like Electro-Pop/Rock. Certainly not badly done, but it wasn’t really what I was expecting. After a short piano intro, “Coward’s Way Out” tends a little towards Melodic Hard Rock in places. But it remains calm. This also continues later, whether “The Truth Will Set You Free”, “Favourite”, “Hey! You! (Over And Over)” – here too a mixture of Electro, Pop and Alternative Rock. A contemplative atmosphere spreads, even if there are more powerful passages from time to time, such as in “Evaporate”, “The King Of Always Wanting More” or “Involuntarily Celibate” – but even these hardly leave the quiet mid-tempo range.

Ammify are clearly sailing under the wrong flag. There is actually nothing to be heard of Metal. The album is mostly dominated by quiet tones, even if more powerful passages can be heard from time to time. What the Australians offer us here is more of a mixture of Electro, Ambient, Pop and Rock. I’m faced with a dilemma when it comes to rating the album. Under the heading of “CineMetal”, I would have to say quite clearly that they have not reached their goals. Nevertheless, “Lost, Not Hiding” is definitely worth listening to. It spreads a lot of melancholy. This is music for which you have to take your time and relax. Only then does the sound unfold its full effect.
