Blackhearth were founded in 2010 by guitarist Alex Hernández and drummer Asier Larrea. Both are apparently also the only remaining members from the early years. But it wasn’t until early 2017 that the band began writing songs for a debut album. The self-titled debut was released in August 2019 via Sliptrick Records. Two years later, the follow-up “The Wrath Of God” is now available. And for the title track, the Basques were able to win none other than Tim “Ripper” Owens (ex-Judas Priest, ex-Iced Earth, KK’s Priest and others). So, it goes without saying that I listened to it.
Judas Priest feeling already spreads with the opener “Betrayal”. Without a long introduction, the Spaniards go straight into the full swing. You want to start banging along immediately. But don’t worry, this is not a cheap copy, but an independent sound. Powerfully driving forward. Plus, of course, solos from the twin guitars. And the drummer really forces his comrades-in-arms on. “Into The Unknown” is Classic Heavy Metal. Not quite as fast as the song before but no less powerful. But Blackhearth can also be quieter, as they prove with “My Bornless Child”. At first, slightly doomy sounds can be heard, which reminds a little of Black Sabbath. This mostly ballad-like song is a highlight on the album. A word about the singer, Alain Concepción has a strong, slightly scratchy sounding voice. And it fits perfectly with the instrumental sound. But with “Rotten To The Core” the contemplation is over. Partly almost Speed Metal, it is fired from all guns. Another quieter song follows. “Nothing But Dust” shines with beautiful melodic and many balladesque interludes. The mercilessly advancing “The Wrath Of God” is crowned by the vocals of Tim Owens. “True Belief” is a typical Priest rocker with a slight thrash edge, while “Reaching The Shore” sounds extremely anthemic. Memories of Dio come to mind here. After a few ballad-like interludes, the last song “Banished Forever” is a real Power Ballad from beginning to end.
Blackhearth have delivered an all-round convincing second album. They bring the spirit of classic heavy metal to life. Good song writing and excellent musicians are the recipe for success. A crystal clear and powerful production rounds off the album. “The Wrath Of God” should not be missing in any heavy metal fan’s record collection.
